How many ppker's do you have who play roller derby? And what are your derby names?!

I just found out that Boulder is starting a league, and I think I want to try out. I'm a little nervous though because I'm a massage therapist and I'm peas terrified of hurting my wrists. WHat were your experiences? And also do I have to spend like $300 of equipment just to try out?? Or is that something they usual let you rent for the night. I've always been to chicken to try out for the denver teams, but sense they're starting one here I figure I could try it out.

Hi, Bunnies! Interesting that you're posting this now, because I was just looking into derby in Boulder a few weeks ago, and I didn't see anything about a league being started up-- how exciting! I'm in Boulder, as well, and while I can't answer any of your questions, I would love to go to tryouts with you and inquire about all of these things. My e-mail is raechel.dumas@gmail.com, and I'm on FB (http://www.facebook.com/raechel.dumas) if you want to keep in touch about this!

I helped to found my local team and skated with them for a year. I've since stopped for various reasons, including some niggling injuries. My derby name is/was Becky Thump.

The league should have equipment you can use for free or hire for a nominal charge/returnable deposit - including wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, skates and a helmet.

When you do start to skate be aware of your posture. Try to skate in a semi-squat with your weight towards the balls of your feet. It's better to fall forwards onto your pads than backwards onto your coccyx (I fell on mine 3/4 times and it's become one of my niggling injuries.).

Hope you have fun!

Bunnies, you may already know this, but I just looked it up, and the new Boulder team is having a meet and greet at The Sink tomorrow night from 7-10. Are you going?
