This is becoming a problem for me on long runs when I am far from home and/or a public toilet...!

Yeah. Going from stationary to movement like..jostles your bowels and reminds them they need to get to work

I know that, and it's great that they are working, but I wish they could just be lazy until I get home.

i've got the same issue. which means these days i get up a little early so i can eat something small, have a glass of water, and walk around a bunch (usually walk the dog if she's not sleeping in) before my morning run. sometimes i'll start off my run with a short loop near a pubic restroom or my home and then once things "get going" i'll use the restroom and continue with the rest of my long run. it usually works out alright for me. it's a pain in the butt though and sometimes i end up running after work since i've found i have to poo more on my morning runs as opposed to the evening ones.

Pretty much all exercise will stimulate peristalsis movement (rhythmic intestinal contractions), good to remember when you have a gas bubble or feel stopped up. I remember having the urge when biking so I pulled over and pooed in the woods, a trucker had pulled over to ask if I was o.k.!

I basically will not run further than 3 miles unless I've had a good poo first. For me, waking up a touch early and having a cup of coffee or a glass of water does the trick. I just can not run with that "have to go" feeling.

What Invictus said. I try to do a short loop first, because it seems if I'm going to get the urge it happens early.

I also try to wake up early so I can get some coffee and water in me to get things moving.

I've had some scary close calls out on a trail without a washroom.

TMI warning - though who would open this thread without expecting that?

Me too. I have occasionally pooped in the woods when the alternative was pooping in my pants. I now only do trail runs later in the morning or afternoon, as I have usually emptied my bowels sufficiently by then. I don't really enjoy talking about poop but this can be a big issue for runners, especially new runners who are taken by surprise.

I find a big glass of water and mug of coffee and a bit of time in the morning helps but sometimes on my way to work I have to stop at a convenient location. On other days I stop and breathe through it and can usually stop the urge. It is almost never an issue in the late afternoon or evening.

Brian makes fun of me because I fart a lot when we're working out. I don't run, but when I run errands I always end up with a half-full cart in Target and the world's biggest shiitake deciding it needs to meet the world.

I've to poo in the woods at least twice in the last few months... (which was when I was visiting my parents, there aren't any woods where I run, considering it's along a main road).

MrsBM: I have, since being a young teenager, always parped when I run. One little toot with every step. Maybe that's why I was a good sprinter at school - I didn't want anyone else to hear/smell. That plus the fact that I was jet-propelled.
