Has anyone here done Mt. Lassen in the winter? We are planning a trip in Feb to pack in from the south entrance and summit, weather permitting , but I know there are at least two avalanche spots to be wary of and I don't have any avalanche experience. Trying to decide if I should start saving to take an avalanche course that I was planning to complete next year or if an online course without field work will be sufficient for this trip.

I don't have any experience with Mt. Lassen but if you're worried about avalanches I would definitely do some kind of practical prep. You don't necessarily need to take a full course, but do some practice with beacons and rescue with your trip partner before you go. And try to get some experience with snow analysis in slide conditions. Learning to avoid avalanches is much safer than dealing with digging someone out of one even if you've done tons of practice.

I backcountry ski in the winter and even though I've done lots of avalanche practice I really, really hope I never get into that situation.

Thanks, Sangria. We will definitely practice with beacons before we go. I just invited my coworker and she might bring her roommate, who used to do ski patrol so I really hope he comes with us!

There's supposed to be a bypass for one of the avalanche regions and people say staying on the ridgeline gets you around the other area.So like you said, just avoiding sketchy areas is the best solution. It's good people have identified the problem areas already. I don't have an eye for that yet.
