I agree, not too much additional strength training for the first few months / year, to give time to your tendons. Eventually you will want to add core workouts, and maybe some wrist curls and wrist twists to protect your elbows (these exercises are recommended against tennis elbow / golfer's elbow, which rock climber can also suffer from).

Thank you for the advice! I am feeling really stoked that I progressed to 10a climbs last night! That's good because my gym only had a few 8's and 9's. I guess I am too much of a n00b for that place. I did add some pushups, straight arm hangs, and core exercises to my weekday workouts, but I'm trying to take it easy so I don't injure myself. I was basically starting from nothing and can only make it to the climbing gym 1x/week so I need a little help. :)

Are you climbing in Emeryville (forget the gym name)? I also had a hard time there as a beginner.
I wear La Sportiva OxyGym's and like them a lot.
And I would agree with everyone's advice to just climb and let your muscles and tendons catch up with you.

No we've been alternating between Great Western Power Co in Oakland and the Peak in Fremont (closer to my work).

I didn't know La Sportiva made vegan shoes. That is good info to have!

In case anyone else wants someone else's link, VeganOutdoorAdventures.com has a page about rock climbing gear (and other pages about other gear): http://veganoutdooradventures.com/vegan-climbing-shoes/
