Last night at the gym while my boyfriend and I did our post work treadmill catch up there was a guy next to us on a treadmill. The dude started 'boxing' it, then throwing punches at the monitor, making grunting noises and then would stop. People were staring, it was was weird. He did this a few times and left. I waited awhile and complained, the staff person knew who I was talking about but did not mention they would take action. Dude could have broken a machine.

So this made it into my list of gym pet peeves. Here are others.

-Getting sweat all over a machine and not bothering to give it a wipe down. Above dude was guilty of this too.
-Grabbing all the free weights and piling them around you and not sharing.
-Just sitting on the mat/equipment and playing with your phone when people are waiting for the space.
-Women wearing so much perfume that it makes you gag when things start getting sweaty.
-Not enough deodorant. This one guy had such bad BO when he walked by me I almost vomited.
-Not washing your hands after using the bathroom and touching all the equipment. Gag - saw this a few weeks back.
-Grunting/showing off/acting a fool. No one is impressed - get over yourself!
-Personal trainers who flirt and talk rather than train.

Do you have any?

This is a trail pet peeve of mine. Out hiking there was a woman in the group ahead of us who was so drenched in fragrance that my allergies started going berserker. We were at elevation so the breathing thing was going to be a challenge anyway, but I didn't want to start out compromised. And, they wouldn't let us pass them. Actually, we did pass but then they started cutting switchbacks and got ahead of us again. Blarg.

I cannot deal with overly scented anything (including people)!

The non-wiping of machines despite signs everywhere and oh I don't know, common sense, just kills me.

The oblique machine breaks all the time. Generally I like free weights best, but there are just a few machines that I dig. Alas, I shall have to get used to the cable twist alternative.. Or do twisting crunches.. something.

Weightlifting screamers...I used to belong to this gym (which I used for many workouts) but I remember in particular, on Wednesday nights I would attend a yoga class, and it was always punctuated, about once every 3 minutes, by this guy who would do a tarzan style scream every time he did a press. If you need to let out THAT kind of noise, you probably should be lifting a bit less.

There was a guy at the last commercial gym I went to who I nicknamed "The Angry Snake", as he would "HISSSS" and "DOOF!" every time he lifted some weights. Everyone across the whole gym floor could hear him.

When I used to go to the gym there was a guy who stacked a load of dumbells on the assisted pull up machine to make it "harder" which was silly as it had weight pins anyway. Then he just left them there for whoever to move.

At the gym I'm about to quit there's a guy who is there no matter when I go, on this ancient-looking stair machine. He puts his forearms over the display and puts his head on his arms while he uses it and sweats all over it. While he's using the machine, he makes this loud throat-clear/coughing noise every six seconds or so, and then every 12 seconds or so, he yells out "WOOOO!" I know how many seconds, because I can hear him OVER the audiobook on my headphones, and I find myself involuntarily counting in between "GARGHGHG!"s and "WOOO!"s.

At the new gym close to work I'm joining with coworkers, there seem to be a lot of dudes there who aren't doing anything at all. We are new to this gym and a little self-conscious, and we aren't sure how to use all of the machines yet. These guys make it so much worse. They just either sit on a machine (resting between sets?) and stare, or stroll around the room staring. It's really unnerving. My preferred gym etiquette includes not staring at or making eye contact with anyone.

Also -- Fox News is on at least two of the ten TVs they have there. At all times.

This isn't a peeve but a funny/weird thing: my friend saw someone in the gym locker room get out a saucepan of oatmeal from her locker and eat it with a wooden spoon! I'm picturing that she was cooking the oatmeal and had to leave right that second to go to the gym, with no time to transfer to a more portable container.

Adding extra weight to the assisted pullup machine makes it easier! You would think he would be embarrassed that he had to add that much weight, therefore he would hurry to clear the dumbbells away so no one would see!

This isn't a pet peeve, but something that baffles me. Every so often when I'm in the weight room, someone will come in and literally do five minutes or less of weights, usually just on one or two machines. What do they think this is accomplishing? Why are they bothering? I'm so confused by these people.

Rhizopus - my friend used to do that when she was training for her forest fire fighting fitness test. at the time, they had to do one type of lift so many times in a few minutes and an endurance test, and when she was short on time, would just go to the gym and do upright rows.

When I was rehabbing a quad injury, I would do just a couple of single-legged sets on the leg extension machine. Less about building muscle that retraining a bum quad to fire. So they might be doing it in a targeted, physical therapy-type way?

Ugh. People who are there to socialize. I was on the second to last treadmill before the stair climber. There were two young women, and one went on the stair climber and one went on the treadmill next to it. It had an error message on the display, but there were tons of other treadmills that did not have error messages and were not in use. The girl went to the desk (right behind me) to try to get someone over to fix that one treadmill, because she HAD to be next to her friend. Since it was broken, the friend decided not to use the stair climber, since they couldn't work out next to each other. Then later they were in the bathroom taking selfies and just being generally loud and giggly. (I also think that it's common sense that you should not have your phone out to take pictures in a place where people are changing clothes. But whatever.)

Plus my gym has 23493483084309 TVs and Fox News is always on at least two. The entire time I was there yesterday, they were talking about Michael Moore and Marilyn Manson. For at least 45 minutes. Because those two guys are super duper relevant. That's some "news" ya got there, Fox.

We've been doing the Planet Fitness 30 minute circuit as part of our workouts (we're just getting into going to the gym together) and I can't stand people who don't follow the rules of the area. Everything that's in there is in the rest of the part of the gym, so if you're not going to follow the rules... don't use that area. It's not rocket science.

And, Hollie - I think gym selfies are one of the most obnoxious things ever. I remember wanting to slap the phone out of some girl's hand at the yoga studio.

ahahahhhaa. i am right there with you. stop chatting so both sides can be even in the length of time i have to hold them, plus - i feel so dumb when i know i can rock out a pose, that is, if someone would BE QUIET so it didn't take extra time while they decide to chat it up. argh!

I go to a bouldering gym which is child-friendly. The kids are typically great (and young competitors are some of the most impressive climbers around), but accompanying, non-bouldering parents? They're the worst. They're typically the people who disregard cleanliness rules (like no drinks over the crash mats) and safety rules (I have seem folks climb with rings on, horse around with cross-training equipment, play with weights right next to people stretching... ) What is the reasoning? Do people think that a gym that accepts children is child proofed and therefore anything goes? I get it that you might get bored sitting on the bleachers for hours, but bring a book or something, don't ruin the place for the rest of us!

Not something that bothers me, but something that I really do not find suitable for a gym.

People who goes to the gym, with gym clothes but arranged as if they were going to get married. Al clothes matching, hair impecable, make up, etc. Of course wearing headphones and avoiding all possible eye and human contact, looking at their cellphone while they are occupying for 30 minutes a cardio machine (they use those machines at a so low intensity that I'm not sure if it can be considered as exercising). Then they sit down in one or weight machines, and leave the gym without a drop os sweat, saying a word nor looking at anybody in the eyes.

I can see those persons are the females equivalent to the very big (and fat most of the times) putting a face as if they will kill anybody who gets on their way, sit down 1 hour in the bench press, lift the bar 2 times in the whole hour, but make sure that everyone turns around to look at them because of their constipated screams and the way they drop the weights against the floor.
And then talk 2 hours with the gym instructor or the receptionist at the gym.

you describe the situation in gyms here to a tee! I have been here 8 years and only this year found a gym where the situation you describe is not the case. Interestingly, it is a women-only gym, which I always found kind of a funny concept, but decided to give a try since it was close to my house. None of the meat market preening, no caveman weight throwing, no people sitting on machines for long periods of time while forking about with their cell phones and people are waiting to use the machines.

There's a women only gym near here, but it's kind of expensive and their hours are terrible. It's hard to beat the $10-$15 a month ones that are opening all around, but it might be worth it so I can use the free weights and not have some guy come try to give me pointers (that all contradict the training program's instructions).

$10 a month? oh you are KILLING me!! this one, even out in the boonies and limited hours, is $100 and it is a great deal. the one I used to go to in the city is now approaching $200 a month, and it isn't even a fancy one. My friend pays $350. I want massages and towel service for that much.
