I did a sprint tri this morning! I got in for free which is why I did the race.

Congrats, parkerk and fupapack! Either of you plan to do any more tris?

I have my second tri on saturday. It's an unofficial race with my running club but I am officially not prepared. I'll be pretty happy with just finishing.

I'm sure you'll do great inceptisol!

Sooo... I had already pretty much planned that 2014 would be my "Iron Year." It was between Arizona in November, which is one of the two "easy" Ironmans in the US, or Cozumel in December, which is a flat bike ride but an expensive trip. WTC has just announced the debut of Ironman Chattanooga for September 2014 and it's billed as a flat, fast course. Downriver swim, rolling bike course that goes into Georgia (which, for some reason, tickles me... a multi-state IM!) and a mostly flat run. I may or may not have an alarm set on my phone for 9am September 4th, when registration opens...

Iron Year! That's so exciting. IM Austria is supposed to be a good one, just saying.

Emailed coach about the options and she said we'll chat and that I can be ready for whichever one I choose. Sort of leaning toward Chattanooga.

I think I set a record for the number of times a person can get lost during a triathlon. It wasn't an official race so the course wasn't marked and was in an area I'm not all that familiar with. I'm not even sure how many times I got off track because I never figured out the correct route but it was at least 5-6. Oops. At least I finished!

So registering for Chattanooga was a complete caramel cluster. At 8:57am my palms started sweating, by 8:59 my heart rate was probably in zone 5, at 9 sharp I logged in and... it was sold out. I refreshed and at 9:03 it said I had a slot held for 15 minutes while I filled out the registration form (meaning someone who nabbed a slot at 9 had exited out, presumably.) I filled out the form and it told me I was out of luck because it was sold out... what the fizzle? So I tried several more times, left for work, tried not to cry at the bus stop (combination of disappointment and adrenaline crash!) and tried again when I got to work, contemplated an Ironman Foundation entry ($1300!) and then saw those sell out in minutes as well.

So, I signed up for my volunteer slot at this year's AZ race in order to have a guaranteed registration for next year. Then on Thursday I got an email from Ironman Chattanooga saying they knew some athletes like myself were told they had slots held but really didn't because the race supposedly sold out faster than's system was aware of (I found out later via my coach's husband that WTC had engaged in some presale shenanigans.) They said they were going to add some slots and would offer them to us in the order that we logged in Wednesday morning and, once those were gone, we'd be offered our choice of guarantee into Arizona, Florida or Lake Tahoe for 2014. Hmm... Florida was not even on my radar because it's one you have to volunteer at in order to get into for the following year and I can't go to FL this year. So at this point I was actually hoping to not get Chattanooga because I wanted a shot at FL! Then yesterday morning I got an email saying I hadn't gotten a Chattanooga slot but I could fill out an eform to claim my guarantee into the consolation race of my choice. Elation! I can have Florida! Reality check: they asked for a first choice and a second choice, so I might still not get it. But if not, I have AZ for sure and I'm exhausted by the roller coaster!

tl;dr - Chattanooga and Cozumel are out, Florida and Arizona are on the table. Either way, November 2014! Ironman!

Oh, and I have a 70.3 on Saturday that I'm not really ready for.

Fantastic finish Katie! I'd be thrilled with that half marathon time as a standalone run let alone in a tri. :)

Bump! I've officially started training for this season. I'm starting almost from scratch, especially with running, due to a really crappy winter on a number of fronts. I'm aiming for a sprint-distance race in May, another in July, and then either another sprint or possibly my first Olympic in August, depending on how the first two go. Anyone else got race plans sorted for this year?

Post subject:  Re: triathlons

262 days until Ironman Florida! I'm run-focused right now (doing a marathon in early May) so the biking and swimming won't pick up significantly for another few months. I will probably do the Lake Stevens 70.3 in August as a 'B' race, and an Olympic in July as a training day.

Exciting, guys!
I don't have any definite plans yet but am thinking about a sprint in june and possibly a longer distance in august. I've been running regularly since slowly coming back from injury and am swimming twice a week but haven't been on my bike in months. Better change that soon! I can't seem to muster up the enthusiasm for biking that i have for running and am starting to have for swimming. Biking is so boring!

I am in awe of your Ironman plans, monkeytoes. Super impressive!

I hear ya on the enthusiasm thing, inceptisol. I looove swimming and have managed to keep that up somewhat regularly, but getting back into biking and running is my big challenge now. I can't wait until spring gets here and it gets at least a little less cold and rainy.

How's everyone doing? Training coming along? I'm still swimming twice a week and have managed to get in a few short bike rides in the last month but need to be doing a lot more. And i have an almost-stress fracture so running is on hold. Grr.

Can you guys tell me about your wetsuits? I think I'm going to have to get one eventually but they are so expensive! My husband will be in the US in May so could get me one for much less money but it seems like something you'd want to try on before buying. Any thoughts?

Post subject:  Re: triathlons

I have bought both of mine mail order, but with the knowledge that I can easily do an exchange by mail if the size isn't right. If you can't easily send it back I would not want to purchase one without trying it on because fit is pretty important. I used to have a long sleeved one but I replaced it with a sleeveless and I like it so much better. Any sacrifice in hydrodynamics is made up for in reduced shoulder fatigue, though your mileage may vary... most of my teammates race in long sleeves.

I bought a wetsuit yesterday!

Thanks for the advice, mtoes. I went to the store intending to just try a few on, see what fit and then possibly have my husband get me one in the US. When I told the guy at the store I was just a beginner he gave me a few to try on that were half price because they were last year's model. I couldn't refuse! Pretty excited to try it out. It's an Aquaman.

How's everyone else doing?

Good! I am having a lazy recovery week post-marathon, then Ironman training begins. I'm registered for two olympics and a half-iron this summer in preparation for the big one. I'll also do some swim races; we have a Friday night open water race series here with 1.2 mile and 2.4 mile distances so I can get a couple of half-iron swims and an iron-distance swim in for practice.

I still haven't had a chance to try out my wetsuit! The weather has been super cold and rainy. They even cancelled the swim portion of the vienna tri this weekend because the water temp was so low. It's supposed to get warm this week so hopefully i'll be able to swim soon.
