For those of you who have completed the program, has your speed increased as you've kept running? Mine hasn't, and I worry that I'm doing it wrong!

I can run 30-40 minutes on the treadmill, but SLOWLY. I've been "running" at 4.1-4.2mph with the incline set at 1. That's practically crawling. Whenever I bump up the speed (to like 4.5, haha), I get uncomfortable after a few minutes and slow it back down. I just feel like I'm not making any progress and wonder if I should push myself harder. Sometimes I peek at other people's treadmills, and the people who appear to be jogging fairly slowly are always going at least 5mph. I must look ridiculous! I really don't care what other people think, but it does make me reconsider whether I'm really "running" or just shuffling along.

I haven't done this program but I think there are a couple of things you could do.
Run at a higher intensity for a shorter period of time. Say you'll do 4.5 for 10 minutes and stick it out.
Do shorter bursts at higher intensity. Do 2 minutes at level 5.2.
If you don't ever push yourself you won't get faster. When I first started running I found that I tended to stay at the same pace without realizing it, so I got a pacer and have seen good improvement in the past few months. I think it's easy to run kind of mindlessly, which isn't bad if you're happy with your pace and time. But if you want to up it, then you have to pay more attention.
Also, I always say it's great to be out and moving. If you are going at a 15 minute mile that is still faster than a walk and better than where you were a month ago. Keep on!

That's good advise, panda. Thanks. I will try the shorter intervals. I think C25K got me in the mindset that my main goal should be duration, no matter how slow. I think I just have to shift the way I'm thinking because I really don't want to be plodding away on the treadmill for longer than I already am. I do find it kind of mindless, which can sometimes be nice, but I want to improve too!

I'm on week two and doing totally good. I'm eating plenty of protein and feeling really awesome - I forgot how great I feel when I run - I feel stronger, more confident, happier, less anxiety prone (although anxiety hasn't really been a big problem for the past year or so) and it feels SO GOOD working towards a non-academic goal where progress is so fast and obvious.
Also, I feel much more attractive - I think I have way better posture because I become aware of my body? It's just such a great feeling. So far I've had no trouble pushing myself out to run - I just came back from a run and it's midnight here (we're having a lot of sun and it's HOT during the day, so I go running in the evenings and today I had late dinner, so I just had to wait until I wasn't super full).

A funny thing about exercising is that I start caring a lot more about myself - I just ordered two dressed and bought a new lipstick. I guess it's natural that when you feel in sync with yourself you want to show it off or something. It feels really great and POSITIVE. Like, I want to treat myself to some nice things because I feel so awesome about myself! I guess it has something to do with my finally finishing school as well.

Today I listened to a Dan Savage podcast while running - it was a pretty awesome match!

I listened to Savage Love while running again today - it was w2d2. It really is an awesome match - and the 40 minutes are pretty perfect for the 5 mins walk + 20 mins of walking/running + a bit more walking + stretching. I was feeling super low (I suspect PMS, but on top of that I managed to watch 3 really depressing indie short films about suicide and loneliness, why did I think that was a good idea again?!) but then I went for a run which completely emptied my mind of everything.

Saturday I managed to move 4,5K during my 40 minutes out, and today I hit 5,5K (both are including walking), but it feels really awesome because it means my goal of actually running 5K sometime during this summer is totally going to happen! I need to find better routes for running, though, I am currently just running around on small streets in the area, and I would LOVE to run to a park instead.

Overall I think I'm doing pretty good. The most amazing part is that it feels SO AWESOME. My boyfriend even commented how crazy it is to see how happy it makes me, almost instantly.

I was doing C25K but got sidelined by injuries. Now I am registered for a 5K in september and need to restart. Not looking forward to running in this heat!

I just started today. I tried to start running last fall but went about it the wrong way, running too fast and too long for a beginner. I downloaded the C25K app and hopefully that will keep me from injuring myself. Yesterday my partner did his first marathon and he just started running a year and a half ago. Standing at the finish line watching everyone finish was so motivating, even if I never plan on doing a marathon.

I'm only on week 4 and it is kicking my arse. This morning didn't suck quite as much as Monday did but how did I ever run for 40 minutes? I'm dying doing 5 at the moment.

haha I say this every time I move up a week I think.

I am going away for work on Monday and traditionally, this is where I'd stop and not restart. So this time I'm determined to do week 5, even if I have to get up at 6am and rund round Docklands! Fingers crossed our hotel has a gym though!

I just started C25K today and it's so forking humid and I feel like I'm dying. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of after-run euphoria or something?

I'm doing my first 5K in November and I've never ran in my life.

I've never felt euphoria. Just knackered!!

You can do it though. I did it and in week one I was dying doing 1minute. it's tough but it works. x

hang in there lady, you can do it! it may be "fall" soon but it is still hot where you are. drink lots of water. you may feel the euphoria, often enough i don't. when i do though, wheeeee what a trip.
[now i have to go running today. after a week of nothing. because i plan to eat so much tomorrow that i need to stack up some exercise beforehand).

I never get the euphoria, but I do feel just kind of...relieved? I don't know if that's the right description of my after-run feelings. I'm just kind of glad it's over with and proud of myself. C25K really does work, though, you just have to power through. I watched my friend go from not being able to run for more than a minute to running for 30 minutes straight. Crazy shiitake. It greatly increased my stamina as well.

Thanks everybody! I feel a lot better after being in the a/c awhile. I don't even know how much of that death feeling was from the actual jogging or the heat. I'll definitely try to go earlier in the day next time.

Did week 5 day 1 this morning. I'm now away for work for 9 days but the hotel attached to the one I'm staying in has kindly said we can use their gym, so I can get my 2 other runs in. YAY.

I actually felt ok this morning doing 3 lots of 5 minutes, well better than I thought I would anyway, considering I was in pain last week doing the 5 minute stretches.

I just started C25k as part of my "kick the SAD" early action plan. This morning I got up at 6 (before dawn) to go run W2D1. It felt fantastic, even though it was dark and in the rain. I have never been a runner - never been one for endurance sports at all, actually - but commuting by bike over the summer has really improved my heart and lung capacity to the point where I feel I have a foundation I can build on without feeling like I'm going to die every 5 steps. Feeling the progression, and feeling like my body can DO stuff is exhilarating. Big thanks to torque for recommending the Chubby Jones podcasts, I really like her style and she gives good, sassy pep talks.

After the run, I got home to shower and eat breakfast, packed my second breakfast and biked (another 5, hilly km) to work. My legs say URGH!

YAY aelle, that's awesome.

I also was up at 6am this morning to be at the gym. Just started week 5 again (despite me saying I would run when I was away for work, I didn't manage to go once! Rubbish). It was ok, considering I'd had a 2 week break. Not looking forward to Wednesday though - 8 minute runs! EEK.

Thinking about doing this again. I don't think I've run since the last time I posted in this thread. It got too hot to run outside, and the gym was too boring. And I got lazy.

I felt good when I was running and should really get back into it.

omg why do I look ahead to the next run? I've just seen that Friday will be my first 20 minute run with no break. Scared.

I remember last time I got this far thinking what a massive jump that is from 2 runs of 8 minutes. I felt like a badass when I managed it.

20 minutes! Go baps, you are a badass!

Today was w2d2, with the dog. Not as exhilarating as Monday morning, but I am going strong. Woop woop!
