Hardly a beautiful picture, but I'm too excited not to share. After months of making our own soymilk, we finally tried our own tofu!

Aside from time, I was surprised at how easy this was to make. Yay for homemade tofu!!

Yeah! I made tofu once, and it was so super fun! Also, super yummy. I only did it once, but I'm so glad I did.

Yah, we smushed it for extra time (because we were in the middle of a 30 Rock episode and because my partner likes his tofu extra firm), so all that yellow liquid was out, making for really white tofu. We're cooking with it tonight, but I'm so happy!

We bought this kit to do it: http://www.amazon.com/SoyaJoy-SJK-2-Tot ... making+kit The reviews say it's only a matter of time until the box falls apart, but whatever, I want to get the hang of it before I buy some fancy metal mold. And it comes with the nigari, so yay!

@ChangeisConstant: Not counting the time for soaking the soy beans, it took roughly 30 minutes to make the soymilk and roughly 30 minutes to curd it up and press it into tofu.

So for an hour's work, fresh tofu!

My hubby made tofu once and it was really good. Yours is beautiful! His definitely wasn't quite that white/firm.

Yay, fresh tofu!

I made tofu from scratch once and everyone I told was SHOCKED and AMAZED that you could make tofu at home, as if tofu were some weird chemical food that needed strange industrial powders, centrifuges and extruders. It was delicious.

That is awesome!

I've got soybeans soaking that I'm about to drain right now to make some and I also nervous!

Oh cool! Been meaning to try it for ages. What coagulant did you use? Is the flavour much nicer/ different than stuff you buy?

Me too! How did it go for you?

I totally used a too-small pot and had to pour hot frothing soymilk into a bigger pot. It was all very tense for a minute!

I used epsom salt as I already had it on hand. I used http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to- ... /?ALLSTEPS I feel like my yield was pretty low. I cooked a bunch of other things too so I didn't eat the tofu. Ate some of the okara though and that was good.

I got a pretty serviceable block from a scant cup of soybeans!

Next time I think I'll press the curds a little longer, it was really delicate when I unwrapped it. I was going for medium firmness.

I used gypsum (calcium sulfate) and tasted a small bit before I stored it in water in the fridge - it was really good! Now to decide how to use the inaugural block...and figure out what to do with the okara!
