My most favorite mushrooms....

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Hen of the woods (Grifola frondosa)

What about you? Got any crazy mushroom obsessions?

I bought a mind blowingly gorgeous, fresh, delicious Maitaki specimen at the Farmers Market in September. Worth every penny. I'd rather have half pound of maitaki than go to the movies anyday.

I'm always keeping my eyes peeled under oak trees in the fall after rainstorms. Haven't found one growing in the wild yet! I have a Fungi Perfecti catelog and have thought about how awesome it would be if someone surprised me with a mushroom growing kit :) They say shittake and oysters are easy to grow.

Any geeky mushroom eating or hunting stories?

I've never seen those before, they're shaped like little pine cones.

The Lion's Mane looks awesome! Seriously, you've now inspired an hour of reading about 'shrooms. :)

It's got a pretty subtle flavor, almost like crab or lobster if that makes sense. Hard to describe! I'd suggest trying it if you really like mushrooms.
