I had the amazing privilege of getting to stay at the Stanford Inn a couple weeks ago. Even though it was #1 on VegNews' bucket list of vegan things to do in your life it was even better than I hoped. Here's my blog post Mendacino California and it’s Vegan Bed & Breakfast: The Stanford Inn if you want to read all about it!
And here is just some of what we ate.
The breakfast is included with the price and you choose from a menu that has everything and get complimentry fresh squeezed juice!
Stanford Inn Florentine – House English muffin, spinach, choice of seasoned tofu, braised tempeh or tamari tempeh slices. Ravens’ Hollandaise Sauce, Choice of country potatoes, sweet potatoes or refried pinto beans
Image

At night the restaurant becomes "The Ravens" much of the produce comes from their amazing onsite organic gardens and they have all the vegan wines marked. And they even have special seating where you can bring your dog!!! (My dogs would be a disaster though) The soups, the spreads and breads, and the amuse-bouche changes every night which is nice if you are eating there every day. We loved the cauliflower with shitake bacon.
Image

For an app we tried the "tamari-Maple Glazed Tofu with wasabi emulsion, sesame seeds and scallions"
Image

The entrees were all outstanding. First, we tried the Spinach ravioli filled with broccoli, shallot, and hemp ricotta, with vodka cashew cream marinara, braised greens and cherry tomato garnish
Image

This is The Grilled Cauliflower Napoleon – Layered grilled cauliflower, tomato, zucchini, eggplant, hemp seed cheese, with Balsamic reduction and basil-spinach infusion drizzle. Served with roasted fingerling potatoes
Image

The Wild Mushroom Crepe – Wild mushrooms in a chickpea crepe, Forbidden black rice, braised bok choy, port wine reduction
Image

and The Sea Palm & Root Vegetable Strudel* – Local sea palm, carrots, onions in sesame phyllo, accompanied by a stir-fry of broccoli, shiitake, bell pepper and cashews. Served with Umeboshi and wasabi sauces
Image

Mint Chocolate Ganache Tart – Almond and hazelnut crust

(you misspelled Mendocino!)

It looks amazing! I went to the Ravens aaaaaages ago and really need to get back sometime. Maybe I can treat myself for the big 3-5! Plus Mendo is just so soul-soothingly peaceful and beautiful.

This place is so great! My husband and I stayed for 3 nights during our honeymoon in May. Everybody was super nice, the food was so delicious, and everything was beautiful. THAT POOL. Some highlights were:
- We stayed in the "barn suite", which was SUPER huge and quiet and right next to the donkeys and horses. They didn't really show any interest in us but I got to see the donkeys excitedly trot over to their food in the morning.
- I had my very first facial with nice lady who talked with me the whole time about cookbooks and recipes she liked
- We went on a scheduled Nature Walk with the smartest, most nature-obsessed woman who pointed out birds nesting in trees and stuff
- It's only about an hour away from Montgomery Woods, where you can see some gorgeous redwoods. The drive is both beautiful and unnerving, because there are tons of trees everywhere but very little else, and you're driving down one road the whole way there. (On the way back we ran out of gas and just barely managed to coast our way to the only gas station we passed!)

It's okay, I'm sure you pronounced it correctly! I remember once having drinks with friends of friends visiting from Australia and the woman kept talking about going to "Mend-uh-CHEE-no," even after I casually worked several "Mend-uh-SEE-no"s into the conversation.

Really, I'm just jealous you got to eat all that delicious food. ;)

My sweetheart and I were going to go this last year but things came up. Hope to right that in 2015: Stanford Inn or bust!

2016: Stanford Inn or bust! New and improved toddler edition! Any suggestions for what to do in Mendocino with a not-quite-two-year old?

There is a miniature forest! The Pygmy Forest in Van Damme http://www.mendocino.com/?id=510

Also plenty of sandy beaches (too cold to swim but sand!), the botanical gardens, seeing the animals around the Stanford Inn, the drive through tree, and I think you can take a train trip in Ft. Bragg.

Awww, I went camping there with my dad once! First time I ever had hobo stew :)

I recall there is a canoe rental just down the street from the Stanford Inn, you could do a paddle trip up the creatively-named Big River. The town of Mendocino itself is definitely not a kiddo destination- think lots of antiques and galleries and the overwhelming sensation of "quaint," but there are a few toy/science stores.

The Skunk Train is a classic and beautiful ride that kids love, and despite it being in Mendocino County, is not named for marijuana: https://www.skunktrain.com/

The Mendocino tourism site reminded me of something I used to LOVE doing when I was a kid- tidepools! Seriously, that will keep her entertained for a long time.

ETA: one evening you guys should hang out on the beach for sunset and watch for The Green Flash. It's a phenomenon that happens on clear days when the sun sets on the ocean and has something to do with the type of bacteria or plankton or whatever in the ocean round those parts. I watched for it last time I was up there but unfortunately the deck of the Stanford Inn doesn't have the best vantage point!

Such great suggestions! Little Nettle had her first train ride last month and was pretty into it after her initial dubiousness wore off and tidepools would be right up her alley, I think. We'll definitely be doing some hiking type things and I think I might be taking a cooking class but I don't think that's really for kids even though she would love it. Thanks so much!

So basically we had a super low key vacation and it was the best. We did a lot of walking on the beaches and through the gardens at the inn - and the gardeners there are the sweetest and gave Little Nettle a tiny radish and a snapdragon that she kept in her pocket all day (she made the snapdragon eat the radish). LazySmurf and Erika, we almost did the trains but there was a construction situation on the road between here and there. We missed the Green Flash but we did see the animals on the grounds - Little Nettle called the horses and llamas cows and said "No feed donkeys!" over and over.

Doing things at toddler speed makes for a pretty mellow trip, we actually had more suggestions than we could use!
