full title: Vegan Tacos: Authentic and Inspired Recipes for Mexico's Favorite Street Food by Jason Wyrick, publisher Vegan Heritage Press

publication date 9-23-2014

I am VERY intrigued by this cookbook. I haven't bought any new cookbooks in awhile. Did anyone recipe test for Vegan Tacos? If so, what did you think?

Do the recipes call for whole ingredients or does the author use convenience foods like store-bought fake meats, sour cream, and what nots?

I do not have gluten allergies, but my digestive system does not like seitan. I was wondering if anyone, who maybe has an advance copy of this or did recipe testing, knows if book uses a lot of seasoned homemade seitan in place of meat, or if soy products are used like tofu, soy curls, and tempeh. Or BEANS! YAY for beans!

I'm a bit nervous about the "entertaining anecdotes from the author," not sure what to expect there, other than maybe he's made the brief intro for each recipe more wacky?

I am intrigued. The description says that the author points the way to making all your ingredients from scratch while also suggesting store bought subs.

thanks for pointing that out!

i'm definitely going to order this when it is released. although i wish it was being released now, warmer weather just makes me think about tacos more ;)

i can always return it back if it's not what i expected, i.e. too many recipes calling for seitan. since seasonings are usually incorporated right into the seitan dough, what do y'all sub for seasoned seitan?

Hello,

I just caught this thread, so my apologies for the late reply.

Very few of the recipes call for seitan as a necessary ingredient. I personally prefer to use whole foods. However, I do give it as an option for many of the recipes so that people can make the tacos for their non-vegan friends who may prefer a meat substitute, or who simply prefer seitan themselves. If that encourages someone to eat outstanding vegan food, I'm all for it, but like I said, the whole foods option is the preferred option in nearly all the recipes. Also, soy curls are not an ingredient used in Vegan Tacos, and tempeh and tofu are each used once, but you will definitely find plenty of chiles, mushrooms, and beans. The tacos are, in essence, meticulously developed vegan versions of authentic tacos that you will find in taquerias across Mexico. If you want to experience what true Mexican food is really about, this book will get you there!

I try not to use seitan or TVP when cooking so I think I'd like this book. I'm glad there's a preview now, I'll go have a look at it.

Very cool, and let me suggest going to www.thevegantaste.com and subscribing (which is free.) I'll be sending out a few recipes from the book as well as for some tacos that aren't in the book, along with videos on how to make them.

Can't wait for this one! My omni bf loves tacos and got super excited when I sent him the amazon link for this book.

I just got a preview copy of this book and it looks totally fantastic. I was worried it would be a bunch of American vegan substituting but the recipes look authentic and wonderful!!! The pictures are great too. And there is a chapter on breakfast tacos!

Yes, the recipes span authentic to fun. I will admit that I am a bit overwhelmed by the authentic recipes. We'll see whether it is worthwhile finding the wacky ingredients. ;)

I really need to view a couple recipes before buying a cookbook. Is there anywhere that I can view a couple of the recipes?

I looked on Amazon and they gave the intro of the book which is cool and all but no recipes.

Oh I see some labeled for vegan tacos. I had seen some previous recipes but none said vegan tacos in it. I may buy because although we don't eat tacos per se... I'd love to see a variety of ways to flavor beans and what not and I've been too lazy to veganize my mexican cookbooks.

It doesn't have too many bean recipes. The meaty element is usually seitan, mushrooms, or a vegetable.

The Barnes & Noble listing had a couple recipe pages that you could preview.

Amazon finally updated to say they'll have it in stock on Monday.

If there aren't many recipes using beans and only one using tofu and tempeh, I feel less interested. I don't use seitan, and tacos with only vegetables don't seem ideal for main meals.
