Does anyone have this cookbook and cooked out of it? I just picked it up the other week and have not made anything out of it. It seems like a good book from what I have look through.

I haven't seen this book. I did take a peak at Skinny bisque in the Kitch at the library and thought it was rather meh. I loved the original book, Skinny bisque, though.

I just bought this book tonight after flipping through it at the bookstore. It looks amazing. Planning on making some meals from it tomorrow and will report back.

So, I just looked it up, Rory Freedman isn't involved in this one? That could be promising.

I thought the writing and food advice in Skinny bisque was so wretched I've been pretty skeptical of consecutive works put out under that title. I mean, when people talked about recipes from In The Kitch they just SOUNDED awful and made up primarily of premade, storebought meat and dairy facsimiles (the ones they so heavily pimped in their first book). What I'm trying to say is, I've found the series really disappointing so far, but this book looks like it might break away from all of that.

This book looks much better than Skinny B**** in the Kitch, which I found was all meat analogs and fake cheese.

There are definitely not a lot of meat analogs or fillers.A lot of it is regular ol' grocery store finds. Going to make the crepes with raspberry sauce today (wish I knew how to post pics for Food Porn!). I was originally going to get Vegan Celebrations but couldn't deal with all of the meat analogs in it.

I got this for free, and I wouldn't pay for it. It's pretty uninventive, though some of dessert recipes look promising.

I am not a fan of the Skinny bisque franchise AT ALL, but Kim is much more tolerable than Rory. I'm thinking of passing my copy along to my roommate, who is interested in basic vegan cooking. She likes the Kind Diet, and there are some similarities between the two books.

I have this from the library at the moment. I'm about to read so will report back when I have!

I wasn't impressed with the recipes in the Skinny bisque books, but this one looks promising. It's looks decent, but still haven't cooked out of it yet.

I read through it yesterday. I found it interesting that she had a small section where she touched on the whole controversy thing, but in the end it didn't come across as a good response. She would have done better to go into more detail, or ignore it completely.
Also I found it interesting that in the acknowledgments bit she doesn't rate Rory a mention.
Also, there seems to be quite a bit of product placement a la Tal Ronnen and Gardein in the recipes. I can't remember the name of the fake meat she is espousing, but there is also a drink and soemthing else.
Other than those things I noticed I thought it was pretty good. The blah blah section was easy to read, informative and interesting. (though in the acknowledgments she thanks her interns for doing the research??!! Isa do you have interns?)
I'd probably not buy it just because it is on the $$$ side.

Like I said before, I honestly didn't notice the use of a lot of meat analogs in the book. There are 3 recipes for Match foods (Match chicken, Match pork, and one other) but its not filled with tempeh-this and seitan-that.

Every recipe I've made so far I've been very pleased with - crepes with raspberry sauce, orange glazed scones, breakfast bake, corn chowder, kale with peanut sauce, and peanutty noodles.

Personally, I'd prefer tempeh and seitan to faux meats. To me, tempeh and seitan stand on their own as unique foods (tempeh/tofu are not that far removed from the bean they come from and seitan can be made at home with a handful of ingredients). I don't have a problem with books that call for those ingredients. From the examples people gave out of In the Kitch, it sounded like way too many recipes called for actual faux meat, not alternative proteins, but faux ham, turkey, chicken, beef, etc. It's nice that this new book has moved away from that, mostly.



I found the section I think you're talking about on the Amazon "look inside." All she touches on is people who never read the book are mad about the fat hate, and then she makes up some bull about how "skinny bisque" is this empowering term that represents taking responsibility for food choices, bullshiitake, bullshiitake, bullshiitake. It's probably for the best that she didn't address all the people who read the book and were bothered by the content (fat hate AND the suggestion that eating processed foods that happen to be plant based is going to make you thin) because I'm sure she'd do an even worse job defending that.

It looks like a great book. It is so weird to me that if she doesn't even stand behind the name (A Skinny bisque is neither skinny nor a bisque?) then why doesn't she just...change the name? Most of us are not eating beef teriaki skewers and drinking martinis as we chastise her, as she indicated. I would feel like a moron going around calling myself a skinny bisque and then explaining to people that skinny bisque doesn't mean skinny or bisque. They'd be all "Okay then."

I picked this up at Borders today, and it looks pretty good! Mostly simple stuff, but there are a few things I'm really looking forward to trying. Also I had a coupon, I'm weak-willed, and I like pretty pictures. (I actually heard about it because I sometimes check the blog of the guy who did the photos, so I had to check them out).

And I'm not crazy about the Match meat, but it's only three recipes. I'll probably sub something else since I almost never order food online.

That totally confused me as well. I couldn't understand her rationalization at all for a skinny bisque not being a skinny bisque and thought I was just being dense.

I put this book on my Christmas list. I am excited for it. I saw Kim on the Today show (I think) a few weeks ago and she made some type of ravioli that looked super yummy. Of course she only got like a 2 minute segment at the end of the show and they pretty much kicked her off of the stage.

The Skinny bisque franchise has a special place in my heart. I started doing their workouts on demand and then bought the book and converted to veganism. I did look at their first cookbook, but didn't buy it because none of the recipes really appealed to me. They were heavy in fake products but I think that was on purpose. It seemed like they figured that a new vegan starting out would find it easier to buy fake stuff and cook with it rather than dive into new cooking techniques. I don't know, I can't speak for them or their methods. But I like them and their foul mouthed ways!

I keep seeing this book but I couldn't figure out what the deal with the name was or how it was connected to the whole Skinny bisque empire and assumed it would be filled with faux meats and cheeses, so I've been ignoring it. Maybe I'll give it a better look next time.

I haven't read it. I'm just going to go right ahead and admit it. I can't get past the title.

I'm really disappointed with the index, yes, the index... I don't get why when cookbooks are telling us to eat seasonally and to shop at Farmer's Markets etc they don't index their recipes by vegetable. When my organic box of vegetables arrives I go through my cookbooks trying to figure out what the hell I'm going to make with whatever arrived that week. If a book doesn't index by vegetable then I will hardly ever use it as I don't have the time or patience to flip through the whole thing to discover if there is anything I can make...

Sorry, bit of a rant there, it's a pet peeve of mine...

I seen this for the first time the other day at Chapters. I thought it looked pretty good, but was a little too pricey right now for me. Pretty pictures (I like a cookbook with good pics). Maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas as I have a crazy cookbook addiction.

I don't want to spend an hour going through all my cookbooks looking for a recipe for something to do with an eggplant that's bout to explode.

I borrowed this from my library and I really liked it. Based on that I put a hold on the first book in the SB series that it all kicked off from. I skimmed over it when it came in and promptly returned it.

I love the Ultimate Everyday Cookbook and would like a copy for my own collection, but I am just amazed at seeing the original book that the whole SB series went on to be so popular.
