As far as I can tell, the first cookbook not from a veg*n organization to use the word 'vegan' on the cover dates from 1980 (Health Eating for the New Age: A Vegan Cookbook by Joyce D'Silva). In the next decade only one more mainstream cookbook uses the word on the cover. Certainly there were previous vegan cookbooks but outside specialist organizations nobody used the word on the cover.

Anyone know of any pre-1980 that would have stocked by retailers other than health food stores?

I had never heard of that one! I thought that Eva Batt's was the first, but that was 1985.

This is the first vegan cookbook that I know of (1910) but it doesn't have "vegan" on the title. But the word hadn't been invented yet, had it? It's called "No Animal Food." You can even download it!

But yeah, going through my books and memory I can't think of a book that says "vegan." Both 10 Talents and the Farm certainly don't.

whoa! that no animal foods book is great! i loooove super old cookbooks and most of them are all animal fat in everything! so great. too bad the word "nutter" never really caught on as the word for nut butter.

I have like 30 or so scanned books with vegetarian recipes 1835-1917 but I somehow missed No Animal Food. I should pay more attention. :)

I have a copy of Strict Vegetarian Cookbook (1984) by Lorine Tadej coming. Vegan but like many doesn't use that word on the cover. Released in a new edition in the mid-90s as Absolutely Vegetarian. Still no scary v-word.

It just seems impossible that 'vegan' only recently came to be seen as a marketable word, but there ya go.

I just Googled: "at the first Vegan Society meeting on November 1, 1944, South Yorkshire's Donald Watson coined the term "Vegan" and observed it was the "the beginning and end of vegetarian."

I was at a meeting with a bunch of older vegans recently. Everyone was telling stories about when they went vegan or vegetarian, and a lot of them (including an 80-year-old woman) talked about how when they stopped eating meat, they hadn't even heard the word vegetarian.
