Hmm, I think it was The Complete Vegetarian Kitchen by Lorna Sass (or possibly a macrobiotic book by Aveline Kushi). I think 'vegan' was a scary word then--these books were quietly vegan. In fact, I didn't even realize at the time that there were no dairy and eggs in the recipe (unsure if honey was used).

As a teenager learning to cook in the early 90's, my first vegetarian cookbook was Cooking with the Dead by Elizabeth Zipern. It's a compilation of recipes from a bunch of hippies who followed the Greatful Dead around. There's even a sequel, Made with Love. My first vegan cookbook was How It All Vegan.

Mine was PETA's Compassionate cook about 10 years ago. I remember it having a good rice crispie square recipe. And a lot of pretty basic recipes, with zero photos. ;) I actually still have it but haven't cracked it open in ages!

1000 Vegan Recipes... I figured I'd find just about everything in this book. I love it and use it a lot, and I sure don't regret my choice. The breads and breakfast sections are particularly great, and the millet-topped lentil shepherd's pie is a keeper. But I have to admit even 1000 is not enough for me. For instance, there seems to be no recipes with rhubarb or fresh/frozen cranberries and only one with parsnip, and these are among my favorite ingredients.

That would definitely make me want to go vegan.

Yup, yup.

I lost mine. I need another copy! I loved the Lima bean sage sausages. I wonder if I still would?

I had it in high school. I also had a Lindsay Wagner book that had a killer lasagna. High Road to Health? That sounds right. They never used the word "vegan" anywhere.

After this thread brought it to the forefront of my mind, I've been cooking again from [the updated version of] Vegan Vittles - and I haven't been disappointed. Good to know good recipes stand the test of time and vegan innovation!

Vegan with a Vengeance, 4 years ago, when I was making the transition from vegetarian to vegan. So glad I picked that book up!

I can't remember my first vegan cookbook but I know which cookbooks turned me vegan: Radiant Health, Inner Wealth by Tess Challis. :)
