It doesn't seem quite fair to consider a recipe a fail after trying it using an untested fat. That seems like a really major substitution to make in a cake.

In the book Chloe said that all her recipes can swap out butter for coconut oil. So in my mind, they were tested with both butter AND coconut oil. I don't mind making it again with butter. (I mean the crumbs itself was AWESOMEness in a pan). But
A: I read the recipe all the way through B: i followed instructions C: I ended up with crumbs - not a thick batter.
and it was (for me) a flop - going with the guidelines that book said. that's all. :)

Noo worries actually i've been noticing that though. In my head I has always thought oil was oil. Canola vs. Butter (when melted) vs. Coconut. but I've noticed coconut oil makes everything a LOT more greasy. I have to find a soy free butter. (I wish earth balance did their soy free in bricks. there's natural flavouring in it though and my best friend is allergic and even "natural flavouring' tends to have some soy tracings for her and she's super senstiive.

Miss Jayme Kat wrote: Bummer. I just made a similar crumbly, oily mess Sunday night when I made the iced apple squares from her other book. I was hoping that was just a fluke. I had the same issue with that particular recipe. The batter was more like a pastry crust. So dry it was not pourable or liquidy like a batter when I put it in the pan. I figured it was all right and when the apples released their moisture it would come together in the oven and with settling. It was crumbly the night it was baked, but the cake settled in the fridge but I still didn't like it much, in the end. I was definitely hoping for a different outcome there. I should also mention this is a recipe from Chloe's Kitchen and not this new book.

Book Depository notified me it's on it's way! Anything I should make, aside from the blondies?

I made the blondies tonight. A tad greasy, but good! I used half earth balance and half coconut spread. I was actually surprised by how impressed I am with the vibe of this book. It's definitely cute and has a lot of great, great photos.

i am so glad it worked for you! I am going to guessume that it was the coconut oil that made it wonky. (I can't handle TOO much grease in my baked goods either).

I just got back from my local Barnes & Noble, and this book was already on the shelf! I snatched it up and started poring over it right away. It's so beautiful! Lots and lots of yummy pictures. I had to really fight the urge to take it home with me. Instead, I came home and preordered it from Amazon, where it is 7 bucks cheaper. Now all I need to do is wait....

Why do you torture me like this??? I was checking out the Veg News preview http://vegnews.com/articles/page.do?pageId=5464&catId=2 Chloe posted to Facebook, not only do I want to make all 3 but I could out of stuff in my pantry right now. Ohhh Chloe lead me not into temptation, must cook more from AFR. :)

The same for me, I couldn't really tell from the first email if it had actually shipped or not but then I got the shipping notification today, hopefully it doesn't take too long to arrive! Those sample recipes look good.

oh shizzle! i hadnt gotten an email from amazon so i assume it hadnt shipped but if i log into my account it says its out for delivery today. except its 6 pm here now.
i just opened my front door which is usually where the fedex/UPS people leave stuff and i was reminded of the 10 feet of snow on my front steps and sidewalk and lawn.
they could totally pull into my driveway and leave it by the garage though. so i dunno. maybe ill get it tomorrow.

I received mine yesterday (best birthday delivery ever!) I'm really excited about the animal cookies, I've had mini circus animal cookie cutters for years. I knew I'd need them for something!

Made the Tiramisu pancakes this morning, even my Mum who doesn't like coconut flavoured stuff enjoyed both the panckaes and coconut cream. Huge success. I'm going to dream of those pancakes tonight.

I made the famed Blondies, and they were awesome! Because I had read the comments here, I only put in 4 Tbsp. of margarine and then I omitted the nuts. Although the batter took forever to spread out into the pan to fill it to the edges, the finished product was yummy. Flattish, but yummy, and not greasy at all!

I'm very excited about the Pistachio Pots de Creme (or something like that). I think I'll make them for Sunday's Oscars.
I want to make the Mojito Choc Chip cookies, but I am afraid of them! Has anyone made them?

I just got my copy, along with Cookin' Crunk in the mail yesterday. So excited! I'm drinking a cup of Nuts for Hot Chocolate, because I have the stuff for it, and I was being stared down by an unopened bag of vegan marshmallows. It's brilliant! Peanut Butter, why have you been missing from my hot chocolate all my life?

Julialegume and I made the cinnamon mocha cupcakes today. They were a hit! I am not used to making all-shortening frosting so that was interesting to make and clean up after. I added some cinnamon extract into the frosting to up the flavor.
