The cookbook isn't released until mid-February but I found a gem of a recipe here:

http://tastespace.wordpress.com/2013/12 ... nut-crust/

Super simple dark chocolate peanut butter pie (the pie crust was my own creation). Enjoy!

Amazon is showing it as available now. No "look inside" feature, at least not on my kindle.

You can also look inside here on google books:

I like supporting well-known vegans, but I've felt so uncomfortable doing anything to support Mayim Bialik ever since I found out she's anti-vaccine. So I probably won't buy this!

Right? That makes it worse. It gives people a reason to think she might know what she's talking about.

+10 for PhD in neuroscience
-100 for being anti-vaccine

Agree, can't support this. Too bad, I love her on Big Bang Theory!

Looks like this will be a good book for beginners.

The recipes look really basic and pretty boring to me. Not going to get as I have so many vegan cookbooks all of which sound better than this one...

One of my good friends who I would describe as intelligent and rational is very anti-vaccine, yet I have another who is also anti-vaccine but they also were surprised when someone talked about eating pork out at a restaurant during the whole swine flu epidemic because you know pork = swine flu.
I'd need to see the context in which Mayim stands on anti-vacc to make a decision on that front.

But after a look at that book excerpt, I guess if you have a large cookbook collection there's going to be some overlap and I didn't see anything about vaccinations in the pages I saw. If I see it a good price I think I'll give it a chance.

I just cancelled my preorder. Not because of the vaccine issue, I have about 85 cookbooks so I don't think a basic one would be of much use to me but I will have a look if I see it in shops

I read through it and the beginning of the book before the recipes is full of non-scientific misinformation about nutrition and health, and a very strong preference for unprosessed whole foods without fried foods, "substitutes" and "mock anything" (vegan cheese, hot dogs, cold cuts, mayo are the devil) which kind of annoyed me because I think processed, non-organic and yes even unhealthy sugar and fat-laden treats have their place in a well-balanced vegan diet. Yet when you get to the recipes there are many that do just that: mimic meat and dairy based foods, are packed with mayo, cream cheese, bacon, egg replacer etc! Which is fine by me but it really contradicts their recommendations in the beginning of the book.

Some of the recipes looked interesting though, lots of Jewish cuisine!

I belong to NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) and she was recently a guest speaker at a conference and there was a huge uproar from members because of her (non-scientific) stance on vaccines. The organization had to release a statement to members saying she was chosen to speak because she is a passionate advocate of science education and her personal opinions are just personal opinions. It's so hard to not go on a rant about the vaccine conspiracy when we now have measles, mumps, and whooping cough breaking out--3rd world diseases that shouldn't exist in the US in 2014.... Must... stop... ranting...!

my friend bought me this book. i was just looking through it - more than the glances at the bookstore. am i overreacting about how much earth balance is called for in some of her sweet recipes?

That is a great review. I've seen quite a few new cookbooks lately where I've had this reaction. Just the other day I was looking at one and telling my husband - "This book feels like it's 15 years old! We don't have to eat this way anymore!" It's weird that people /vegans haven't realized how much vegan food has advanced.

It is not a horrible book, the recipes are easy, simple and newbie friendly. Maybe she is capitalizing on her TV status and introducing more people to veganisim? I am not down with all the medical-kids stuff because I do not have kids to worry about...

I might make the pb pie this weekend - it is simple and cheap...

To those of you who will be in LA this weekend-- Mayim Bialik will be at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (held on the USC campus) held this coming Sunday afternoon (April 13) to discuss this book (sometimes they also have cooking demonstrations). Alicia Silverstone will also be there, but a day earlier. This event is free and open to the public.
