1/2 cup of red wine is in the ingredients list, but I didn't see where in the narrative for the recipe you put it in ... or is it optional? I made the soup last night to eat tonight and I was tired, so maybe I was just being stupid...

Alcohol is pretty much always optional (you may want to substitute broth or water?), but usually it's added at some point where you'd deglaze your pot.

I know alcohol is used for deglazing a pan, but I think in Cuban Black Beans it just goes right in during cooking. That acid from the alcohol adds a very distinct flavor that's standard in this dish. It's one of my favs.

I ended up not adding the wine, and the soup was so awesome without it that I don't know if I will put it in the next time either. It just may have been the most delicious black bean soup I have ever tasted.
