So the chick who runs veggiebeauty.com told me that China Glaze is owned by a company who tests and she wasn't able to find out about ORLY's testing policy, does anyone have recent info that I can pass on to her?

Orly owns Sparitual or they're owned by the same company or something, so I can't see Orly testing. PETA's site says that Orly International does not test on animals.

As for China Glaze:

"Date: September 25, 2011 1:34:11 PM EDT (CA)

Dear Joanne,
Thank you for contacting us. We are happy to assist you today.
We do not test our products on animals nor do we contract others to test on animals. All of our ingredients are listed on the product labels.
Our nail polishes do not contain any of the items you listed, but you may find Keratin and or silk proteins in some of our treatments such as Seche Rebuild and China Glaze Nail Strengthener.
If you need additional information please feel free to contact us again.
Sincerely,
Abigail Bryant

American International are on Peta's do not test list too, so according to Peta China Glaze is cruelty free.

Orly is on Peta's list too

American International owns Seche Vite too, which I hate, but is the most popular top coat out there, so you could let her know that too.

Chanel don't test but their polish ingredients say that they may contain carmine. You can email them about specific shades, but the same ingredient list is on all the colors so you can't figure it out without emailing.

This is the reply about China Glaze and testing:

Dear Kristy,

Thank you for contacting us. We are happy to assist you today.

We understand your concern and you will be happy to know that we do not test on animals nor do we contract another agency to test our products on animals; however, at this time we cannot guarantee the policies of our raw material vendors.

We are in the process of obtaining animal testing statements from our raw material vendors. The European Union passed a law banning animal testing on ingredients and finished products. The deadline date for testing is set for March 2013. Cosmetic raw material vendors are more than aware of this regulation so alternative testing has been implemented.

Since we are a global company we are going to ensure that our products meet the standards of the European Union.

If you need additional assistance please contact us again.

Sincerely,

Abigail Bryant

So it's up to the individual if they are comfortable with the idea that some of the ingredients that they use may have been tested on animals.

I'm so psyched for the EU ban, I just hope the companies lobbying against it (L'Oreal I heard, and I imagine others) aren't able to get it weakened or pushed back.

ACK. So the new magnetic polishes from Icing say they may contain guanine, which means not all Icing polishes are vegan.

I an sooooooooo sorry.

This is what I asked in my emails
Quote:
Hi, I'm interested in trying your nail polish, but I had two questions first. Are your products or ingredients tested on animals? Also, does your nail polish contain any animal derived ingredients (such as carmine, guanine, pearl, silk, shellac, or others I haven't listed)?

thank you so much for the list! I've been wondering about nail polishes for so long and the only brands I knew about were Zoya, American Apparel, Scotch Naturals and Spa Ritual.

Does anyone know if Orly nail defense is vegan? The top of my nail peels sometimes and it is driving me insane.

I use the nail hardener from No Miss. I don't know if they ship internationally though, I get mine from Vegan Essentials.

I was just looking into buying Orly from a online store and it said "Enriched with natural pearl it provides superior chip resistance and up to two weeks of dazzling colour" while talking about the brand. I have sent them an email and will post their reply.

There's no pearl or guanine in the ingredients on the bottles, nor is that written anywhere on the bottles. Are you sure that was for a color and not a base or top coat?

I'm not honestly sure. I have found several other online store mentioning the natural pearl extract. One of them says "Every bottle of Orly nail lacquer is enriched with natural pearl for enhanced shine and durability". Maybe they use to use pearl extract but don't anymore? This is really confusing, hopefully they will reply soon so we know what is going on.

eatmonaeat: Did you get an email from American Apparel or something? I'm just wondering because the neon colors are the ones I'd want. I've not seen the distinction elsewhere. I guess I should just contact them, but I thought I'd ask here first. I'm not even sure if I want to shop at AA, but I want neon nail polish!
