Bounce is made by P&G, which has eliminated most of their animal testing. Of course you could write to companies to be sure, but I would caution against assuming specifically vegan-marketed products like dryer sheets are any more "cruelty free" than products from mainstream brands. Likely neither one of them really contributes signficantly to animal cruetly, but the "vegan" dryer sheets will likely be much more expensive. Well, I wrote to them to confirm, because I'd heard about tallow, but it wasn't clear from their ingredient list. Quote: Dear Amy,
Thanks for contacting Bounce.
All versions of Bounce contain tallow. We use beef fat. (Pork may be used, as well.) The fat is chemically altered during manufacturing and no longer resembles the original material by the time it is added to the product.
Thanks again for writing.

Megan H. Bounce Team Wow. That's pretty disgusting. I suppose once I finish my giant box of Kirkland dryer sheets (probably in a few years, as I only use half a sheet with particularly staticy items) I may need to look for some alternatives, assuming they are made from similar stuff. Thanks for posting that!

Wow, gross. Neither vegan nor halal. I used to teach ESL and would try to help out my Muslim students who were newly arrived by letting them know what foods, cosmetics, etc might have pork products in them. The list got so long that I think most of them saw America as a disgusting, bacon-filled hellscape. Dryer sheets never entered my mind as a possibility.

Megan H. Bounce Team Thanks for posting this. I would never have thought to check my dryer sheets, and I've got a huge box of Bounce. It kinda grosses me out since I just did laundry yesterday, but I think I'm just going to give the box to my brother and buy new ones when I go grocery shopping tomorrow.

I really want to switch to something that's at least more eco-friendly than horrible Downy or whatever.

i used ecover back when i was staying with a woman (farmer/homesteader) that didn't want me to use her clothes dryer.
(but apparently ecover uses non-sustainable palm oil. so, forked if you do, and forked if you don't) maybe try the vinegar thing? you can get a bottle of lavender essential oil and put a few drops in to make it scented.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiick. ugh, wish I would have known this sooner.
However, on the detergent side of things, I've been using Econuts (4-5 in a bag, 10 loads for each bag), and they smell amazing. Work pretty well on my clothes.

I really want to switch to something that's at least more eco-friendly than horrible Downy or whatever. So, it won't live up to your partner's smelly expectations, but I use white vinegar as liquid softener. I'm so icked out by Bounce's reply. And it's worse because the box of Bounce I have now is the only time I think I've ever bought that brand because it was on clearance. (as I said before, I usually use Target's house brand.) Not that I think Target's are "cleaner" but now I KNOW I'm sitting in animal fat. Ew. Also, how nice of them to reassure you by saying that it "no longer resembles the original material"

Seventh Generation makes a liquid softener. I've no idea how it works since I don't like liquid softeners, but their laundry detergent is pretty good.
