Is anyone aware of hair dye that isn't tested on animals/isn't made from animals that one can get at a walgreens/whole foods/grocery store?

Are there any major hair dye brands that are inadvertently vegan?

Thanks!

I ended up going with Ion, some of their products say 100% vegan on the front. I don't know about the hair dyes though. I will look that up and get back to you all about that. Thanks for your suggestions thus far!!

naturtint can be found at whole foods and online. i'm pretty sure rusk color is vegan & they do not test. paul mitchell and pravana don't test, but they contain lanolin & beeswax, most pravana products contain silk.

Aveda, but that's salon colour only. That's what I get done and it's goooorgeous.

You mentioned you were looking for a nice auburn color- something like the henna sold at LUSH might be worth considering!

Resurrecting this thread because I've been doing research for myself and thought others might be interested. Behold, a list of vegan salon hair color options.

All vegan lines:
Framesi
Organic Color Systems

Paul Mitchell vegan options:
Dual-Purpose Lightener
Synchrolift
all developers
PM Shines and PM Shines processing liquid
Flash Finish toners

Paul Mitchell The Color and Shines XG are NOT vegan as both lines contain a beeswax base.

jessilikewhoa thanks for that!

Does anyone have any non-salon hair color brands? I need hair help :(

I am a light blonde. I have not been able to find anything in a drugstore/do it yourself that is even halfway cruelty free. It is my one item that I just cant find a replacement for. Henna, and stuff like that won't work, I need an actual hair color system, like the do it yourself bottles that are found in drugstores and target and whatnot.

At this point, I will buy something that is not tested, even if it is owned by a bad company....or items with a bit of beeswax or anything. I feel bad using what I use now, but I have a professional job and can't risk an experiment with henna or natural stuff, nor can I afford a salon visit every 6 weeks. My $7.99 hair-color in a box works great, but I have moral issues with it.

The ironic part: I am naturally a light blonde. My hair comes in a medium/dark blonde. Even if I leave it natural, it gets lighter about 2 inches from the roots, from sun, elements etc. And not a cool, ombre like fade to light. It is always a ROOT LINE. Ugh. Stuck in a horrible cycle of dying my hair every 6-8 weeks. If I can't find anything, its either back to the box, or I might MIGHT try growing it out again. But man, does it look bad...especially when I am doing events, and I do some stuff on camera.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them! I have gone to hair message forums, but they are zero help because of the cruelty free aspect.

The only cruelty free vegan box colors I know of are Naturtint and Herbatint, and I've seen pretty mixed reviews on both brands. I know they sell one if not both brands at Whole Foods. Splat box colors are cruelty free and vegan too, but most of them are just lightener and then a crazy colored Manic Panic style vegetable dye, the only natural color they make is black.

If you're willing to buy something that's just not tested, but isn't necessarily vegan, Sally Beauty Supply sells Ion hair color, and One' n Only Argan hair color (owned by Conair who are on the Peta do not test list). They're just as easy to use as box dye.

Naturtint is the home dye that's vegan/CF, I think it's about $15? So pricier than most dyes but not as much as going to a salon. You can kind it at most health food stores or even on amazon. Jessi probably knows what you can get at Sally's, it might be cheaper to get a thing of developer, some dye, and a bowl/brush.

I had a friend in high school who had the same kind of hair, people always asked her why she didn't fix her roots and she got really annoyed.

Thanks! I will check out those brands. $15 is fine, but i will probably drop a Franklin if I go into WF to buy it. That store is trouble!

I'll check out the Argan one too. I think i have used their products before and liked them, years ago.

Just adding to the list because I've been recently switching up my hair. Joico is also vegan, as well as Ion. Joico is mostly used in salons, so it harder to find dyes. But Ion is sold at all Sally's. It is super cheap too. Although as an FYI, the purple and teal both aren't so great. The blues and pinks are perfect though. Just be sure to add conditioner to thin them out. I have Joico's Titanium coming in the mail, I'll update you guys as to how it goes.

Are you sure on Joico? They're not on any of the main cruelty free lists (Peta, Leaping Bunny, or Logical Harmony) and their site says they test where required by law. That would be awesome if they are cruelty free, cause I hear great things about the brand.

Well, my old hair stylist used Joico and called to check & assured me it was vegan.

Also, it's listed here as not only not tested on animals, but that the company only creates vegan products.

http://www.vegfamily.com/lists/cruelty- ... panies.htm

I think what the website is saying is that they are vegan. At least in the US where cosmetic type animal testing is not required. I don't know where it is mandatory, but I guess they don't have a choice in those areas?

Well since that site says it's from Peta and Jessi says that company isn't on Peta's list, i'd say that list is out of date.

Vegan and cruelty-free aren't the same thing, cruelty-free means no animal testing so as long as the product doesn't have animal ingredients one could say it's vegan and not be lying. And they have a choice to not sell their products in places that require testing. 'where required by law' = not cruelty-free.

Dug a little deeper, because I couldn't find anything on Joico or their parent company Zotos International. Apparently they're owned by Shiseido, so even if theoretically Joico is cruelty free, which I'm doubting based on the language on their site and their absence from the big 3 lists, their parent company's parent company still tests.

ETA: If you have an iphone (I'd guess other smart phones too. but I'm not 100%sure) both Leaping Bunny and Peta have downloadable apps for their cruelty free lists, which are incredibly useful. The Peta one is called Bunny Free and has a search box where you can look for specific companies. Some (like Joico) don't return any results, ones Peta certifies as cruelty free say so, with a parenthetical aside if their parent company tests, and ones Peta has on their list of companies that do test will say so as well. Joico's absence means they're likely a grey area as far as Peta is concerned, likely they haven't responded to Peta's inquiries.

Leaping Bunny's app is called Cruelty-Free and lists Leaping Bunny certified brands in a list where you can tap to jump to specific first letters.

Both apps are free.

Like MBM said, cruelty-free doesn't necessarily mean vegan, so unless a company provides vegan labelling or a vegan list you'll have to contact them, or check a site like Logical Harmony, or veganmakeup.tumblr.com

So, I just contacted Joico and spoke to their testing department. None of their testing is done on animals - only synthetic materials and humans. I consider this to be cruelty free. I'm unsure of how it couldn't be. I understand the parent company thing. But, I think supporting their company that does not test on animals speaks for what we want. There are tons of food companies that own the brands that are purely vegan. The parent company also sells meat/dairy products. I find supporting a vegan/no animal testing company owned by a non-vegan parent company to be the same sort of thing.

Anyway, I understand we can have different views. I just thought that the information might be useful.

They also verified that all of their products are manufactured in the US, so there is no legal requirement for them to test on animals, therefore they do not.
