I drink my coffee and tea through a straw. I always have. It always squigged me out a little drinking super hot liquid through plastic, but I did it anyway (you know, toxic chemicals leaking and all that stuff). So the other day I bought a glass straw and I love it! If you've ever thought of trying one I highly recommend them.

You've convinced me! I've been eyeing these for awhile: http://www.etsy.com/listing/158410709/g ... =related-2
Previously they've only had normal sized straws, so i was a bit hesitant. But i drink smoothies everyday, so i would get a lot of use out of it. I've been debating what my end-of-summer, done-with-work present to myself should be. Now i know.

I love it! It looks slightly like some weird drug paraphernalia, but still cool.

It does! That's what I thought of when I read the thread title.

Ooooh! I've meant to buy glass straws for years. Good thing I never did, because wowie have they gotten prettier! Cobalt blue, bent and pinched glass straws...

EDITED TO ADD: Always thought of glass straws as an environmental move/ tooth-stain-prevention-measure. Never considered that drinking through hot plastic might be a bad idea.

Haha, the funny thing is that there is another Etsy shop that makes glass "tobacco and legal smoking herb" pipes with similar octopuses. The location is the same. I'm convinced they are the same person who wanted to keep their paraphernalia and household goods separate.

But yeah, i'm totally going to give in and buy one. Since i drink a smoothie nearly everyday, it will totally be worth it. Now to decide which pretty octopus will be mine..

I really like the Glass Dharma straws I have. http://www.glassdharma.com/
They are guaranteed against breakage, even. I've had mine for years.

Edit to add: The bended one in smoothie diameter is so, so perfect.

Man. I'd like to support "the original" artist, assuming they're right about that, but they don't have cobalt blue! Clearly, I need to ponder this decision for another few years.

GlassDharma is where I got mine. they shipped out literally hours after I placed my order, and shipping was only about two bucks! They have different lengths and diameters (ie for soda, smoothies, or bubble tea). If you want it for hot drinks, I highly suggest clicking on the "underground" section and get a coffee straw. They diameter is perfect so you don't suck up too much scalding coffee and burn your mouth and throat.

Make sure you get a brush!

How in the hell would someone clean one of these things? I have a bottle that is made of some blah-something-non-toxic thing and it is sitting about useless as I cannot get my wee paw inside the damn thing to clean it! How do you clean a straw?!

Yeah, there are probably little bristly brushes that fit in the straw to clean them.

I have a glass straw collection made mostly of straws from Strawesome. They sell brushes that fit inside of the smoothie straws for $3. It's a tight squeeze to get them inside of the skinnier straws, but it can be done. Mostly I just try to clean them as soon as I'm done using them, and then do a pass through with the brush as needed.

I love those octopus straws! So cool!

Ya, they tweeted about that recently. They loved the colors but could not be secure in the sourcing; the colored glass was coming from overseas and didn't stand up to their quality standards. So I hear you, re: pretty straws! But, I do like GD's sourcing standards.

And yes, buy a brush to match. My initial investment in glass straws + brush was probably $20 or so, but it makes green juice and smoothie drinking super enjoyable and I no longer buy plastic straws.

we've used stainless steel straws for years (we just run hot water through them and they clean up quickly), but i never considered glass straws. brilliant - and i just might have to invest in some. yay!

You can get the brushes in different diameters to clean your specific straw (sipper, smoothie, bubble tea, whatever). Just make sure the brush fits the *inside* diameter of the straw, not the outside. The straws are much thicker than plastic so the inner and outer measurements are different.

i got a little mason jar/glass straw combo in a vegan presence parcel a month or two ago and i was totally excited; i'd been curious about glass straws forever but had never bought one for myself. i use mine for iced chai or smoothies; i've never used it for hot drinks but now you have me curious about all of these fancy options.

Yes, their 'about us' info was very persuasive. Plus, lifetime guarantee!
