someone posted this link on a local vegan fb page and i thought folks here might find it useful. this blogger contacted a bunch of athletic shoe companies to enquire about their use of animal products and has made a handy dandy list. if you click on the name of the company, you can also see how each company answered their correspondence.

vegan athletic shoes 2013

eta: they also asked about working conditions and reported about that when they received an answer.

That's interesting! Thanks for sharing. I'm confused though as I've emailed Nike about a couple of models of shoes, and I've received word back that there were no animal products.

Quote:
Hello Nicole,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Nike LunarEclipse shoes. I have been a Lunar fan for some time, and probably will be for life.

Though we cannot guarantee that any specific product is 100% non-animal, I can verify that the LunarEclipse was built using synthetic materials both inside and out. There are no animal containing adhesives that were used in the manufacturing processes. The upper was primarily created using a 'heat press' process that involves high levels of heat to fasten all materials together.

I hope this information is helpful, Nicole. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance, as I am always here to help.

Best regards,

Stephen

i am afraid to ask that if it's made of synthetics and synthetic glues, why can't they guarantee it's 100% animal free.

Yeah, I don't want to think about it. Brooks work better for me anyway.

Sadly, the Nike LunarGlide is one of the best shoes on my feet. Other ones seem to cause me pain after a while and it took a lot of trial and error to figure that out.

I just read that as there could be something in the dyes or other materials, not that there definitely is. I just don't think they want to make claims that could be proven wrong later. They probably don't know a lot about the specifics of the methods and ingredients that their overseas manufacturers partners use.

This is very VERY helpful!

Athletic shoes are hard to find, and I am desperately in need of new shoes. I have ALWAYS been a sketchers fan, and I had pretty much given up on them. Seeing that they have options is fantastic. I just love wearing their black trainers, or some of the slip on's during tradeshows and events.
