We want to go sledding today, but we grew up in Florida we don't know from sleds.

Here are our options:

I'm not sure which one would be fastest (except n. 7 would be the slowest), but anything in plastic goes quite fast.

I like number six because you can get more than one person in it, but the disc ones look better for single-person sledding. I am overwhelmed.

We had number 6 when i was a kid and it's good for piling a bunch of people in it. Also easier to steer than the round ones.

We also had one of the old fashioned wood kind with metal runners and my dad would put wax on the runners...holy bujeezus, it made you go fast!!!

You put a rope on the front of number six, right? Maybe we'll get that one and wax the bottom.

Ropes are for wimps! you're supposed to be holding on for dear life, constantly afraid you will be thrown from the sled and into a tree!

#6 for the straight-down-the-hill experience.
#4 if you want to get dizzy, fall off halfway down the hill, and get snow down your pants.

I don't like being dizzy.

Whatever you get, spray the bottom with Crisco or something similar.

How did it go?

Saucers are the answer! I was riding one when I sledded into a concrete wall!

2., 4., or 6. Not for kids, though! Kinda dangerous if you get on one of those at the top of a big hill...like luckyklutz is testifying!
My cousin once ran through a fence on one like those, stitches were needed.
Another fun fact, our childhood toboggan hill was very big and high, but not all that long, so we gauged a good ride by having made it all the way to the bottom of the hill (easy to do) and up the slight incline onto...the TRAIN tracks! Active train tracks. Yeah, THAT was safe!!!

I vote #4 or #6.

Have fun sledding! I'm jealous... No snow here in SF. I guess I should take a trip to Tahoe soon.

yes make sure you are sledding somewhere safe! Mines a medium size hill, not too steep, and then theres like a flat field for you to gently glide to a stop. no trees, fences, cars, or trains. there are sometimes jumps built by teens that you gotta watch out for.
useful tip for a first timer: dip your foot in the snow whichever way you want to go (so if you want to veer right, dip right foot)

Saucers are fast but harder to handle! The best sled I owned was much like 6. Fast, easy to navigate and you could fit more than one person.

The saucers are a really fun way to get hurt. I've gone through fences and knocked the wind out of myself with them, but dang you go fast. We had one like 6 growing up and it was great. You can lay down head first on it too which is a really stupid/fun idea.

#3 sort of looks like it might be an inflatable tube. In which case, go for it!

Otherwise, #6 is a fast alternative.

Also, if you're looking for hills, there is no better resource than TobogganHills.com.

It would be great if you also added your favorite local hills to the map in case they aren't already there.

:)

We went to get #6 and they were sold out, so we got #3 because it was only $15. We'll get #6 if we seen one used or if they have it in stock.

It actually worked great! It's a flexible foam/plastic disc about a 1/2 inch thick. You can't really steer and you kind of spin a lot, but it's still really fun. And fast!
