I'm breaking in some shoes and they're killing me, so I've been putting two really big band-aids on the back of each ankle every day. This is getting expensive and wasteful since I'm not actually bleeding or anything, so I was wondering if anyone knows of a product that can be reapplied. Or at least sticks really well so I can get a few days out of them (if the shoes don't rub the band-aids off, they just fall of in the shower). Thanks!

You could try Tegaderms. They are availale in most pharmacies but are kind of expensive. They stick really well and can be kept on for up to a week. Just make sure you apply them to clean, dry skin.

Tape over a piece of cotton/gauze? Would it work to wear double socks or shove something cushiony in the heel of your socks?

I use bandaid tough strips. They usually last for a few days at a time.

how about some masking tape over a little piece of cloth? can you tape inside the shoe where it is rubbing you? i have a pair of boots with something pokey on the inside, and that's what i did because it was ruining my socks everytime i put them on.

What about putting something like this in the shoes:

http://www.footpetals.com/Heavenly%20Heelz.html

I use these in a couple of pairs of slightly-too-large, uncomfortable shoes and they've really helped. I've also seen some generic, slightly cheaper, heel liners at the drugstore.

I second Tegaderm. They don't come off for a really long time (up to a week).

It sounds weird but surfboard wax totally works to protect your heels (as long as your skin isn't already broken). Just rub a nice thick layer on the area where your shoes are bothering you. It's cheap too, a little bar of Mr Zog's is like $2.50.

Yeah, I'd do something like this. Petroleum jelly works too.

Yeah, I'd do something like this. Petroleum jelly works too.

i get horrible blisters and i learned when i played lacrosse to wear two pairs of socks, both thin, and slather on the petroleum jelly.

alternatively, how about a roll of gauze or an ace bandage?

tegaderms are great, but if you have sensitive skin be careful- some people have allergies to them. I believe they contain latex but the adhesive was what caused my daughter to develop nasty bleeding ulcers from them.

I was thinking of this as well.

Thanks, everyone. I think I'll try the Tegaderms first. I have the footpetals in there already and it helps, but not completely. They're boots, so maybe they aren't placed quite right, but I'm hesitant to mess with the placement because I'm not actually bleeding now (and I was the first three times I wore them).

I was actually just going to recommend this!

Another vote for petroleum jelly! And if it's that your ankles are rubbing the material and getting irritated (and it's not that the material is poking inward on you), I've also heard that using stick deodorant works for some reason.

There is a product specifically for this use: http://www.rei.com/product/767416

Don't worry, it's not actually made out of moles. I think I've seen it in drugstores, too.

Haha! I haven't been able to find the Tegaderms yet, so I have this on me right now (it's cotton). I'm not sure, but I think it was peeling off just from trying to get my foot in my boot. I may try to run out for some petroleum jelly if the snow stops.

I always use these (well, own brand versions of these) for shoes that are rubbing
Image

They stick really well, last for a long time and a quite padded so they stop any pain from new shoes.

My boot saga continues:

The moleskin came right off with my sock, so it may work out a little cheaper than regular bandages, but it's still wasteful. And one of the footpetals fell out of my boot. But I found a stick of the Band-Aid Friction Block stuff (it looks like a tiny stick of deodorant that you rub on your heels to sort of lube them up, I guess) that's been in my cabinet since roughly the dawn of time, so I have no idea what's in it. I've been using the Friction Block, and even with only one footpetal, the boots rub a little, but aren't doing any real damage.

So I probably won't buy anything else, since I'm so close to breaking them in, unless I replace the missing footpetal. I will bookmark this for the future, though, since I tend to buy kind of ridiculous shoes. Thanks!
