So ladies, were do you all stand on shellac and the Lac bug? Below is my comment correspondence with Scotch Naturals about their new formula they call NaturaLac(TM):
On their Facebook page under a link to their blog post announcing the new formula, I asked if they are using the Lac bug as the source for shellac or if they found a vegan-appropriate shellac. They replied with this wiki entry about the Lac bug:
SCOTCH Naturals: Good afternoon Julia Moran Martz. Shellac is a natural resin secreted by a tiny species of insect (laccifer lacca) that is native to India and Thailand. The lac bug spends its six-month life cycle in unimaginably large colonies feeding, and breeding on small, shrub sized trees called lac trees. As they feed on the sap of these small trees they secrete lac much as bees secrete wax. This resinous material is then harvested from the trees to be purified and is used as a natural lacquer.
Their second reply:
It is our understanding from our supplier that the bugs are not killed in the harvesting. We consider ourselves cruelty-free. Cheers, Ginny (CEO/Founder)

I think their suppliers may be telling them what they think they want to hear. "300,000 lac insects are killed for every kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of lac resin produced. Approximately 25% of all unrefined, harvested lac resin is composed of “insect debris” and other impurities according to the Shellac Export Promotion Council" according to the Vegetarian Resource Group blog - http://www.vrg.org/blog/2010/11/30/q-a-on-shellac/
