Yes, I second bronner's for brush cleansing. Shampoo works really great too.

Urban Decay has a whole new line of vegan brushes that look really good; I only have their blender brush (which is pretty rad) and their Wonder brush (which is merely ok) from the old line. I do like the synthetic MAC brushes as well. Most of what I have are synthetic from Sephora or MAC; save the two odd pregan MAC brushes I have somewhere.

This. Also I have UD and Body Shop ones that have lasted years, (10 your for my body shop ones, 10 for my origins ones, and 6 for my UD ones) and they are all still in perfect quality. I've recently replaced an old brush with the retro UD wonder brush and it's my new favorite thing ever. I also have a crease brush and blender from them. My Body shop ones are a travel set.

I wear makeup every day and usually change my look once or twice, so that helps you gage just how much all the brushes are used. I'm insane with makeup. Literally INSANE

but I assume a blending/smudge brush is for smoky effects and colour mixing?

Liner brushes are likely the thin ones?

Yeah, blending brush for blending and smoky eyes and liner brushes are usually long and thin for lining - they also might be small and thin all over if it's for liquid liner.

For basic eye shadow application it's just an eye shadow brush. The stiffer ones are better if you want a hard line and not a smoky effect - they are also better if you want to line with it instead of getting a seperate brush. I use my UD eye shadow brush to put bright eyeshadow as my eyeliner on my bottom lid. It's thin and stiff so it works.

If I want really heavy application, I don't bother with a brush, I just use the little applicator sponge thingie they give you with most eyeshadows. They're really cheap and at any store that has makeup.

MAC has some synthetic brushes, you can also find synthetic brushes at Sephora. these companies do not test on animals.

I'm only recently learning the secrets, largely thanks to Melisser's Cruelty Free Face site. I got the eco tools set ofeyebrushes the other day and started using them trying to remember her video tutorial. After I was finished and started putting them away I noticed they were labeled, "crease", "smudge", etc. So it's not a dumb question at all, but those labels are really helpful for beginners.
