Is this happening for good? It's been in the works for so long, I kinda pessimistically assumed it would be postponed forever...

YES! What a fantastic victory for the animals. Can China please be next?

I just read this, and I'm so happy they stated that products must not be tested anywhere in the world. And March! That's soon.
What do you all think about old products though? I mean, let's say L'Oreal is no longer going to test any new products because of the ban, but they have tested in the past or whatever. Will you continue to boycott L'Oreal?

How are they going to check if a company tests in another country? Why wouldn't an underdeveloped country become an "animal testing haven" that doesn't disclose any information?

i don't think any company wants to test on animals that much. if you're thinking that they might do it in order to sell products in countries that require it, like china, the continued sale of their products in those places would probably be enough evidence of animal testing that it would hardly seem worth it to try to conduct that testing in secret. i guess it will be a question of which markets they're most invested in.

I don't think they want to test the finished products, but, they want to develop new ingredients to be ahead of other companies.
Well, I guess they can still test new ingredients on animals in the EU if only they say those are for household cleaning products and not cosmetics :/

Will you continue to boycott L'Oreal? I've only thought a bit about it but not had the chance to have a sit down and a good debate with myself over it. I might be open to the new products but not the old ones for now unless they completely give up animal testing. I haven't thought about it enough though to say for sure what I would do.

Chuffed to bits. I still wouldn't buy L'oreal because of the Nestle connection, but it's a massive victory for animals and ethical consumers.

It is a great news and I really hope other countries will follow suit.
However, our shelves are still stacked with animal tested products and products from companies that continue to test in other countries. Will it cause companies to pull out of China? Probably not. It is only NEW products that will be banned in the UK if they are tested and they can continue to test products not for sale in the UK.
So what I'm trying to say, very unarticulately, is that I still won't be buying L'Oreal... etc as they still animal test.

I'm a bit late to this, but I was just checking what 'cosmetics' means (to me that was makeup) but it's pretty much anything you put on your skin or teeth: "Cosmetic products are substances * or mixtures of substances intended to be placed in contact with the external parts of the human body (epidermis, hair system, nails, etc.) or with the teeth and the mucous membranes of the oral cavity with a view exclusively or mainly to cleaning them, perfuming them, changing their appearance, protecting them, keeping them in good condition or correcting body odours." Also, it's all products and ingredients: "Animal testing must be replaced by alternative methods. The Regulation prohibits the performance of animal testing in the European Union for: finished products, ingredients or combinations of ingredients. The Regulation also prohibits the placing on the European Union market of: products where the final formulation has been the subject of animal testing; products containing ingredients or combinations of ingredients which have been the subject of animal testing." (both quotes taken from http://europa.eu/legislation_summaries/ ... 013_en.htm) The EU actually banned testing of cosmetics on animals in 2004, and ingredients in 2009, apart from some exceptions. Anyway, this is great news, anything produced in the EU or for the EU market cannot be tested.
