Seriously, a comparison to PETA? WHAT THE FORK Quote: dunno, i think there's a difference between fun, edgy and clever, and then there's obnoxious, crude and poor taste, which groups like PETA frequently indulge in. It's sort of like Colbert vs Beavis & Butthead. And i dunno if 'mofo' is something i want to associate with vegan activism, but maybe that's just me! Quote: it's not just you. even if they weren't intending for it to be a short form of motherf*cker, it is often taken that way. the term motherf*cker is misogynistic and problematic for multiple reasons. although im not horribly offended by it, i still tend to not want to post any of their recipes, etc because i also dont want to be associated with a group called "mofo". Quote: Thanks, i concur. And it may not be a group, but there are certainly individuals promoting this. Again, i love the outcome, but the name was poorly considered, and alienates a great many as well who would rather not associate veganism with backward-thinking like misogyny (which is implied in the term 'mofo'). Surely we can come up with something better than that to 'tag onto'...?? *HEAD*DESK*

Geez, we're all here just trying to have a good wholesome time and they gotta go ruin it with their dirty minds.
Seriously though, it's pretty ridiculous that they would go out of their way to boycott it.

I actually had to have somebody ask me about the usage of it before I even went there. That was last year. She wasn't offended, just found it funny. I don't like the *other* term that mofo stands for, but my gosh...lighten up.

I think they're ridiculous, but then again I'd never seen that use of the term before (and it makes no sense to me). If you google "mofo" the first hit is a law firm.

My mother was seriously disappointed when she found out what VeganMoFo really stands for. People, maybe we are wrong for getting people hopes up.

Someone wrote a really hilariously offended blog post about how Vegan MoFo was super sexist either last year or the year before. If people can't get over it, then I just don't know what to say. They must have awfully easy lives to have time to worry about such trivial stuff.

But... aren't you supposed to think "motherf*cker"? Isn't that why it's a fun name?

Also, it was a riff on NaNoWriMo.

Every time I hear it it makes me think of the giant law firm Morrison and Foerster, which goes by MoFo for short in the Big Law community. But that's 'cause I'm a nerd.

People are weird. I don't think "motherf*cker" is a misogynistic word. "Vegan Mofo" is funny!

Those are the kind of vegans that I don't want to affiliate with...why go out of your way to alienate a group of fun loving vegans, trying to spread the word and inform others about a really great lifestyle?? I'm totally down with the MoFo...but, to be fair, the people who are offended by the term probably feel that we are going out of our way to alienate a group of fun loving vegans (them)...so while I am personally not bothered by the term, I feel like it's relevant to at least acknowledge that some people are. I don't think anyone here is purposely trying to alienate anybody, but I have to admit, if the name for the event had a word that offended me in the name -- like, oh, I don't know, VeganFaggot? -- I would probably not want to participate. So basically...I don't entirely agree, but I get it why they're upset.
