Hey NY PPKers,

I'm going to be working on MacDougal just south of Washington Square Park for a couple weeks and I'm curious what the mega mega cheap food options are in the area. I already know of the wonder of Mamoun's, and I've heard about the dosa cart guy in the park. Also, I know Red Bamboo and Vegetarian's Paradise are right there too.

What other brilliant cheap things are around?

I'm particularly interested in salads or soups or something like that-- I'd love to not have to eat bread and processed soy products all the time, since I'm eating heaps of seitan and soy at the moment (blasted P90X) and I'd actually like to take a break from both as much as I can during my New York time.

ideas?

Is Dojo around there? Their veggie burger dinner is dirt cheap and pretty good.

sacred chow is right there, but not especially cheap. you can get on a quick subway ride on the E train from the west 4th stop to 'Snice! That's what I'd recommend because it's one of my favorite places to eat in the city. $8 super filling sandwiches and salads and awesome desserts. and you can get stuff like a curried chickpea wrap and really good salads that don't have tofu or seitan or fake meat.

but ijdi,why would you take the train over to the 8th ave s'nice when there is a s'nice on sullivan street less than half a block south of houston?that's practically right where she's working!

also, i didn't know there was another 'snice. i'm guessing ijdi didn't either or else she wouldn't have suggested the 8th ave. location.

it's not super cheap, but lifethyme (on 6th ave just above 8th street) has a nice salad bar as well as a pretty good selection of pre-prepared raw foods and a juice bar. they also have cookies that are as big as your face (the pb chocolate chip are good). Gobo is also near there if you want a fancier, sit-down lunch.

you also won't be too far from little atlas (on west 4th between broadway and mercer). they have vegan treats and decent sandwiches.

salad bar! yes!

AAAAND I continue to work where there is nothing to eat.
