After hours of shaking it at the Mermaid Parade on little food, I got my starved self out of Coney Island and back to my 'hood. Budget and hunger align perfectly at Punjabi
on 1st street. I feel the need to mention it because it doesn't seem to come up very often in discussions of where to eat while visiting NYC. And who isn't on a budget? Yes, it's standing only and the food is nuked and served in styrofoam--which is a detractor. But $3 buys a lot of food, and $5 buys so much that I couldn't inhale it all as quickly as I wanted to. Plus it's spicy and delicious.
It's known as a cabbie stop, but the street parking out front is gone during road construction. So maybe the friendly proprietors need some extra love from pedestrians and cyclists while the street is being torn up outside.
