It's beach clean up season again and Sea Shepherd New York is starting with Rockaway Beach, right near a whole bunch of awesome vegan food.

WHAT: Join Sea Shepherd NYC volunteers to clean up Beach 116 on the Rockaways. Bring water, sunscreen, and a light snack. We will provide work gloves and plastic bags. There will be someone to watch your bags.

We will have limited merchandise for sale, such as baseball caps, stickers, and patches. If you would like to buy a t-shirt, please email us your style and size preference and we will let you know if we have it in stock and bring it.

WHEN: July 10, 2010 from 1 to 3 PM

WHERE: Rockaway Park, Beach 116 - meet on the boardwalk (look for Sea Shepherd Jolly Roger flag)

DIRECTIONS: A Train (Far Rockaway bound - not the Lefferts Boulevard) to The Broad Channel stop. Get off the train and wait on the same platform for the Shuttle Train (Gray) that is going to Rockaway Park-Beach 116. Get off at the Beach 116 stop, exiting the station and turning left and walk to the boardwalk.

If you have not already filled out the on-shore volunteer forms and liability and confidentiality forms, please do so prior to coming to the clean up.

I'm thinking about coming. Just curious, is rockaway considered a dirty beach? I'd thought of it as relatively clean. Trying to sell some friends on the idea and swimming after, but it's hard to reconcile the two.

I asked a local and this is what she had to say:

The water is great. And the beach at beach 116 is only dirty because people don't throw things out and leave things on the beach. I was there on this past Monday (at beach 109) and went in the water. It was clear enough to see some fishies! Also, the beach is really only dirty where large groups of people congregate, like beach 116.

So swimming after should be fine. Maybe just go a few blocks down. And a bunch of us will probably be hitting Rockaway Taco and stuff after!
