I grew up here (both in Flatbush and in Queens) and after going to college in VT, lived in Williamsburg and Greenpoint since graduating in 1998. But that got too expensive and annoying so my boyfriend and I moved in with friends in Ridgewood 3 years ago - had a baby along the way, and am expecting another - and love our living situation, but we have to get the hell outta NYC ASAP. I hate to be one of those "things have changed" people but it's just not the NYC I love anymore (and my boyfriend, who has been here since 2000, has come to absolutely loathe it and doesn't even want to leave the house ever.)

I am definitely definitely looking forward to moving somewhere else, probably out west and probably not to another big city, but my job is keeping us here...I'm basically waiting for the attorney I work for to retire (he's 80) because I just can't walk away from a job that supports me, my boyfriend and our kid(s). I have many friends that are like family to me in the Brooklyn punk community and I will miss them forever, but I gotta go!

Rossman's Produce! A cornucopia of cheap produce and surprisingly accidentally vegan products. (Not everything there is vegan, but a lot of things you would never expect are.)

And the best hummus in the world.

I highly recommend living within walking distance, so it's easier to satisfy those 3 in the morning cravings.

I love Rossman's! I'm not sure I'd love walking there at 3am though, what with all the porn and liquor stores and all.



I know this was mentioned a long while, but believe it or not we live in 1908 and our monthly rent does include heat, but not hot water, which seemed crazy to me too, but the hot water bill is pretty nominal so it's not a big deal.

So yeah, I afford it by living with my boyfriend in a studio apartment and having to pay $20 extra per month for hot water. Our place is also unusually cheap because it's sort of an absentee landlord situation, which means the building is a bit dumpy and things don't get fixed quickly (or ever), but the rent doesn't go up. If you can find a landlord that doesn't understand the internet (or can't be bothered with it) you're probably going to get a better deal.

You're missing the best part! Like when my (now) wife and I were waiting in line at the cash register and the prostitute that was behind us kept asking us if we wanted to see the dynamite in her purse and made us kiss.

Well there you go...since then I've seen some listing for hot water separate. The Internet-clueless landlord thing has worked for me twice in the past. The "no rent raise = almost no repairs" sounds all too familiar.

i don't make that much money, but i live simply & have roommates.
