If you're headed out to Rockaway this Summer(like everyone else in town), rest assured you'll be well fed! Rockaway Taco re-opens today for the season! And brings back it's well loved vegan-friendly eats. Chilaquiles with black beans and avocado(weekend mornings only!), marinated tofu tacos, fried plantains, chips and guacamole, spicy cucumber mango salad. MMMS. PLUS sweet vegan snacks from Woodside Bakehouse- chewy organic granola bars and spicy peanut caramel corn! And right next door is DiCosmo's Italian Ices!! Always vegan, always cheap, always fresh. Don't forget the big food boardwalk takeover too! Opening Memorial Day weekend are some mega exciting finds, unheard of for beachfront territory. No more hot dogs n grease in those big boardwalk buildings, more like Thai food, fresh cut fries, real popsicles, a Caracas outpost, Blue Bottle coffee, endless veg treats from Veggie Island, seasonal fresh sodas from P&H Soda Co., and BABYCAKES, just to name a few. Not to mention all the mobile carts you'll see dealin' actual real tasty food. Local businesses shine here. OMG I'm starving. And pasty. Good things Summer's here!

Can't wait for another season of tacos! Plus I heart the cold brew coffee next door so much.

Is this near the beach? There's been talk of Sea Shepherd NYC doing a beach cleanup near there, but I'm not familiar with the area at all.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/16/fashi ... ral&src=meThat article mentions babycakes, quinoa black bean burgers, vegetarian sandwiches and non-dairy smoothies. My partner used to surf in Rockaway, but we haven't been there for years. Now I want to go check it out!

Oh sorry! I hadn't noticed this one before. Well, now I really need to go...
I do go to Coney more often. I wish they'd open up some vegan concessions there!
Or, alternately, start doing boardwalk house (music) day parties in Rockaway too...

I'm going on Sunday! I'll be meeting friends closer to Fort Tilden area, but will take my bike on the train for mobility and taco/smoothie access. And probably be mistaken for "...young, artsy types who make their home in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Arriving by single-gear bicycle..." except I'm not so young anymore.

I had a tofu taco at rockaway taco. Yum. I would potentially be up for a midweek visit.

I'm going to Rockaway tomorrow! I went last weekend and now I'm officially a Rockaway addict. Potato flautas minus crema + chips and guac + Babycakes donuts + crazy-good soda? AND the beach? Yeah. I bought a swimsuit for the first time since the 8th grade specifically to go to this beach again.

Had a grand time on the beach with the SS and trash on Sunday. Also had the blue bottle iced coffee with soy milk, and tofu taco from Rockaway Taco. Extremely long line at the main location, but they do a good job with the tofu so it's sort of worth the wait? My belly wasn't in the mood for Baby Cakes or DiCosmos treats.
Agreed that a midweek visit is the way to go.

Oh yeah! I got the tofu taco and watermelon juice and a mango ice from DiCosmos. The tacos were good, but not at all the flavor profile I think of when I think "taco". The watermelon juice was a little cucumbery and the ices were AMAZING. I may have liked the ice best because it was 473892 degrees, though (but the bits of mango in them are fabulous no matter what the weather).

Was there on Tuesday and Babycakes doesn't seem to be open Mon or Tues for the hookey-playing masses. And Veggie coffee (or whatever it's called) on the boardwalk doesn't have soy milk. But whatever, the taco and plantain chips with guac are swell...and a Conejo granola bar is always welcome, of course!

I'm going for lunch today. Then heading over to Coney Island for the boardwalk house party in the afternoon.
