Unfortunately I agree...unfortunate because I like Inwood/Washington Heights. Due to the subway line to Mosholu Pkwy, you're probably best off living on the Upper East Side in the Mid 70s-Low/Mid 90s. The further east from the subway station the more affordable the apartment and the whole neighborhood is very safe albeit not terribly exciting. On the Upper East there's Candle Cafe, Candle 79, V-note, and Gobo. On the weekends you can go south for other vegetarian restaurants and they seem to be heavily stacked on the east side of Manhattan.
