I borrowed my friend's car (it is fancy and I don't drive even though I do have a drivers license) and drove to newark airport and back to staten island after-- but I didn't understand how to get the ez pass to read and I ran three tolls. Eventually I figured out how to hold it for the last toll and then I got lost and went through another toll successfully. I am sick about it! Because it was my friend's car.

Has anyone ever done this? Can it be sorted out?

EZPass will record her license plate and charge the account. It shouldn't be a big deal, but you should probably give her a heads up in case they send her a letter about not using her tag or something.

yes and yes.

ez pass, sun pass (florida)..etc they all work the same way in that your friend will receive a letter with a request for payment.
in florida, they include a picture of the car and license plate which makes it impossible to deny. it's not as bad as you think but give your friend the heads up because it takes a few weeks to get the letter.

I've done it too. It's no big! Just let her know to give you the bill.

In NJ the EZ pass holder must keep a balance in the account, something minimal, like $15 or $25, so the tolls should be covered. (Maybe? I guess the city tolls are practically nearing three figures these days). Anyway, there probably won't be a bill, just a deduction from the balance.

Yeah, shouldn't be a big deal at all (although I do not understand people who don't just mount their EZ Pass so this doesn't happen!). Even when I've accidentally run tolls when driving my mother's car because I forget she doesn't have EZPass, they've just sent her a letter and then I've called and asked them to add her car to my account, so if it happens again it's just deducted from my account. Also, there might be a processing fee attached to any unpaid toll when/if your friend gets a bill - if you actually call them, they will always waive the processing fee. But you may not even have to deal with that since it was the car attached to the EZPass tag anyway.
