i need to find my way up to boston this saturday.
flights are expensive.
amtrak is slightly less than a flight but still expensive.

what other options do i have?
greyhound? a train other than amtrack?

help!

Bus is the best way to go! I used to always use Bonanza or on occasion Fung Wah- they're super cheap (the Fung Wah ones were crashing regularly there for a while, not sure if they've resolved that)- when we go up to the US and are based in NJ we go up to visit the folks in New England by bus. Peter Pan drops you right in South Station.

Megabus or amtrak is how I usually travel upstate. Bolt bus is another cheap-o bus option (but I've never ridden that.)

my cousin usually takes the greyhound. she can tell you some serious horror stories about the fung wah, but her greyhound trips have been relatively uneventful.

I like bolt bus and mega bus pretty much equally. The earlier you book, the cheaper it is, so it might not be that cheap for this weekend, but it'll be much cheaper than flying or amtrak

i took the trailways bus to woodstock and it was suprisingly nice.
my only other bus experience has been with greyhound and greyhound is pretty sketch in other states.

I'd look into Amtrak--depending on where you're going, it can be cheaper to take a train than a bus. It costs half as much for me to take a train to visit upstate NY from Boston than a bus to the same location.

It really depends on the route. Sometimes Amtrak is the cheapest! Sometimes Megabus! Sometimes Greyhound! Sometimes regional transit! Megabus (which others have mentioned) is often really cheap from NYC to Boston. I've taken Greyhound (really Peter Pan) from NYC to Massachusetts a couple times in the past year and I feel like it's a lot more pleasant than it used to be. I think most of the buses now have plugs/wifi on them. It's still a bus, so it won't be as roomy or comfortable as Amtrak, but it's not gross or anything. I think long-haul public transportation around the NE corridor is generally a lot nicer/more developed than it is in other parts of the country.

I took Amtrak to Penn Station from Boston and the food car had a vegan burger! It was a crappy Boca burger, but still.

For me, the huge bonus with taking a train vs a bus is being able to read for awhile without getting carsick.

amtrak from seattle to portland, i would get that nauseous/queasy feeling towards the end and it was a 3 hr trip.
but it's good to know i can buy food in a pinch.

The Chinatown bus companies were all shut down in May because of safety violations and stuff like unlicensed drivers and high numbers of accidents, I don't think they've reopened again.
I like Bolt because they let you take bikes, Megabus doesn't. Jerks. You can get crazy cheap deals on both of those though. A friend of mine recently travelled Pittsburgh-NYC for $5.
