Are there any recommended dog trainers in NYC? I have been warned that sometimes they're quacks... I am a little nervous to select one and don't want to find out the hard way when we're saving money for the move. We're looking for private lessons, not group classes.

I've used Jessica at Dapper Dog for private training and she's good - solved our dog's problem (he hates strangers in the house) with a management solution (that is, he still hates visitors, but she helped us come up with methods for getting him into his crate and getting him to wait quietly while there are guests in the house so that his issues don't stop us from having guests over). It took about 5 or 6 sessions, I can't remember exactly. Feel free to pm me if you want more info!

We're about to try out a group class at the school for dogs. I went to their orientation session with Annie and she seemed like a good, positive reinforcement trainer. They also do one-on-one lessons. I'll have better info in a couple of weeks.

We met with Jessica! She was very nice, helpful, and gave us homework, but unfortunately with our moving expenses we won't be able to keep doing seeing her for a little while. Soon, though. Thanks for the rec!
