Hi everyone! I'll be spending Monday in NYC with an old friend, and I'm kind of at a loss for what to do. My NYC adventures are usually entirely food-based, but I can't do that this time. The friend I'm meeting up with has stomach cancer, and can't eat a lot without being in lots of pain. So what are some non-food things you like to do in the city? It looks like it's going to be a beautiful and not scorching day, so outside stuff is welcome.

Thanks!

Botanical Gardens? There's the Brooklyn http://www.bbg.org/ and the bronx http://www.nybg.org/visit/directions.php#mta I've only ever been to the Brooklyn one and it's amazing. But I understand if you don't want to leave Manhattan. There's always Central Park, or the Cloisters. The Cloisters are great, but it's a whole day thing.

I love the Frick Museum, which is indoors, but it is not an all day thing and it's a really nice experience.
Merchants House Museum? http://www.merchantshouse.org/

I'm a bit at a loss of what to in Manhattan outside of going to a park, although I can think of lots of stuff that's outside in the other boroughs.

If you like bookstores, the strand is a fun one and mcnally jackson often has good readings/events.

You could go to the tenement museum or the new museum (contemporary art) and then walk around nolita and the lower east side (and stop at moo shoes).

There's also the highline and chelsea market (near blossom bakery if your friend is up for a cookie or small treat).

you could go to the metropolitan museum and head up to its rooftop cafe. even if you don't eat anything, the view is so lovely, and it probably wouldn't be too crowded during the day on a monday (i'm guessing? maybe it's always crowded). and then you're right there in central park if you want to walk around.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I especially like the botanical gardens idea.

I just got home! I picked him up from the bus station at 8:30 this morning. We found a cafe around the corner, where we drank coffee, ate donuts (that I had gotten from Dun-Well the night before), and caught up. Then we walked to the Guggenheim. Then we got lunch at V-Spot. Then we lounged around in Central Park for a while, getting bitten by black flies. Then we wandered around Times Square and drank milkshakes from Blossom Cafe til we caught our respective busses home at 8:45pm. All in all, a super fun and sweet day.

It doesn't work for Mondays, but the carnival that's on Governors Island this summer on weekends is really fun.
