I've tried the lemon poppy cake from Wholefoods (made by Cafe Indigo) and it was lovely but not quite citrusy enough for my o/h. Any suggestions?

A vegan one, or any one?

Yes, a vegan one! I always forget this isn't an entirely vegan forum. :)

I was just confused, probably because I never go to Whole Foods and I sort of just realized they have vegan stuff, but it's still inconvenient for me to go there.

I would look and see maybe Babycakes, Blossom Bakery, Dunwells in Brooklyn, or maybe Atlas if Vegan Treats sent them something lemony.

Haha, thanks ijustdiedinside - I sometimes see people posting saying they aren't vegan yet so just assumed it wasn't a vegan forum.

Thanks for the tips Alaina. Those places are on my list to try but I was hoping someone would have tried it to save me buying and trying them all! I always choose something chocolatey so haven't really explored the citrus options on previous visits. (The o/h doesn't bother with cake but its his birthday while we're here this time so I wanted to get him some birthday cake!)

Everything I've had at all those places except for Babycakes (cause I haven't been there) has been good, so my assumption is if they have something lemony it will be good too. There's tons of vegan restaurants that have vegan desserts. I had a banging asparagus banana cake at Blossom Cafe on Carmine. which is infinitely better then the place on 9th Ave. The food is just as good but the one on Carmine is so much more relaxed.

I saw Quantum Leap had a vegan key lime pie this month.

Thanks. The cafe indigo lemon cake from Wholefoods was good, don't get me wrong - it just lacked zing, that sharp citrus bite that the o/h is looking for. I love most NY cakes and desserts but he isn't really into them so is more difficult to please.

Nothing lemony at Atlas, Peacefood, Cinnamon Snail or Jivamukti. I'm generally not a fan of Babycakes although I had a nice pumpkin eclair there the other day. He wouldn't thank me for a raw dessert so that's a no go. I know Blossom used to do a lemon cake so I might try their bakery tomorrow.

I ate at Bossom on Carmine just after it opened and plan to go back this trip but I have to admit I have a particular soft spot for Blossom on Ninth as my first trip there made a big impression, it was so different to anywhere else at the time. I feel I've missed out if we don't eat at all the Bossoms (harder to keep up with that as they've expanded!) as well as to both Candles on each trip!

There are three Candles now...the new one is another cafe and the menu is slightly different from the other one.

That jolts my memory, I'm pretty sure we went there when we were last in town - I can't recall when that was but I know the second Peacefood Cafe was coming (but not open yet) and Blossom on Carmine was newly open.
So that's another place to add to the list!

I got the lemon cake from Blossom bakery. It was nice but in my opinion not hugely lemony or zesty either. I give up!

I had a lemon and lime cake from Champs which was quite good but the key lime cheesecake at Cafe Blossom was beautifully sharp and zesty. (Cafe Atlas were going to order the lime cake in for me but sadly they forgot.)

I had a slice of the lemon lime cake from Atlas (Vegan Treats) once and it was good. Can't remember if it was tangy/zesty, but it was lemon-y and good. If you're up for something raw, Hail Mary makes a lemon tart that is almost equally zesty and sour (in a good way) that I used to get all the time when I worked at a juice boutique that carried them. They're costly but sometimes they'd have a sample out on the counter when you'd go in.
