Hi PPK. Long time, no see. I'm hoping I can pick your brains about where my husband and I should go to dinner on our planned night out in NY. (We have a baby and no family by us in LA, so this is a rare opportunity for us to do something fancy). We're planning to go to a broadway show with an 8pm curtain call, so I'd like a place that's close enough so that we have a reasonable subway ride from dinner to the show.

The restaurant does not need to be completely vegan (although that would be a bonus) as long as the vegan options are nummy. I'm hoping for something a bit upscale. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I will now return to my regularly scheduled food porn viewing.

Ease of travel depends where exactly your show is on but I would say Blossom on 9th (about 10 minutes walk from the 23rd St on the C/E) has the best romantic atmosphere as well as wonderful food. Candle 79 is pretty fab too but may be a trickier journey (at 77th St on the 6). Both are entirely vegan.

Another recommendation for Candle 79 (http://www.candle79.com). We also had an incredible meal at Hangawi (http://www.hangawirestaurant.com) - so incredible that we're planning to go back when we're in the city again in two weeks!

Thanks guys. All of these choices sound great. Candle 79 is the only one of the bunch that I've been to.

The theater is a few blocks from the C/E stop at 42nd, so it looks like Blossom would be doable. Hangawi is only a mile away from the theater, so we could walk there. I'll have to see how opposed my husband is to taking the subway to our show. (He has no problem with taking it generally, but for some reason wanted a walking distance restaurant for this particular night out).

You could try Kajitsu, it's really wonderful and not too far from the theater district (it's between Park and Lexington in the upper 30s, so it'd be a quick cab ride).

Kajitsu is absolutely phenomenal. If you want to go all out and money's not an issue I'd place this, not just dinner but experience, above every other vegan restaurant in the city.

Otherwise most of the other big hitters in the scene have been mentioned. Maybe Pure Food and Wine, but it's not walking distance.

Just came back from another weekend jaunt during which we ate at Blossom, Pure Food and Wine, Kajitsu, and V-Note; all four meals were amazing. Every time I'm in NYC I'm overwhelmed by the choices; it's a good thing we don't live there or we'd not only be gluttons but absolutely broke!

Gobo is really good too. It's not as fancy as Pure Food or Kajitsu, but I would put it on the same level as Blossom.
