omg. isa, mumbles & i went to 3 brothers tonight and it was holy shiitake good!
isa promised to post pics later. we ate a ton of food because, seriously, when you drive an hour for food, you have to make it count.

we had:
eggplant rollatini, caesar salad, and oyster mushroom "calamari" appetizers. the batter on the mushrooms was amazing. really light and crispy. so awesome.
fettucini alfredo, seitan sausage & peppers parmesan hero, and oyster mushroom scampi over linguine. i almost got vetoed on the scampi because we had a mushroom app. nice try, isa & mumbles.
pesto tofu pizza.

seriously. it was so super good.

I want to go here so much! Aubade really sold me on the mozz sticks.

i'm dying to go but it seems like it will take forever to get there from new haven, so we keep thinking we'll go from nyc sometime when we're there, but then we never want to leave the city, and and... i will get there some day!

You know what the problem is with this place? Every time I go there, I can't decide what to get. There is so much I haven't tried yet, but then everything I have already tried is so delicious I want it again. Damn you, Jay. I'm due for another trip.

I had major decision paralysis. So many awesome options. I regret not getting the buffalo drumsticks (you should always get the buffalo drumsticks), but the oyster mushroom 'calamari' was fantastic.

I'm going to have to find more excuses to go to Long Island.

It's only about 35-40 minutes on the LIRR and walking distance from the Rockville Centre train station. More expensive, but easier than getting to certain parts of Brooklyn.

Seriously, everyone go here. But fork, skip the mozz sticks and try some of the homemade sauce because you will not find anything like it anywhere else in the world! I know that for a fact because I've been everywhere in the world.

I live right by this place and I go there frequently. It's really nice to have a restaurant with real vegan options. I make all of my friends and family go. As far as it being close to the RVC train station, well, it's probably about a 20 minute walk. I guess it all depends on what you're used to.

There was another thread on 3 Bros where we discussed some of our favorites. If you're visiting, you might want to check out both threads for recommendations. My fav is the calzone. I make a similar one at home but it's just not as good as 3 Bros.

I keep trying to invent reasons for us to be driving around out in LI (and we are not far, on the Brooklyn-Queens border) but no luck yet. This place sounds amazing.

went again with ijdi & isa's bf. this place is UH. MAY. ZING.

new-to-me things we tried: tofu crab cakes (so super good!), seitan cacciatore (really good!), and pizza with housemade seitan sausage, broccoli rabe & cashew ricotta (seriously really good!).

everyone should eat here all the time! it's just really good italian food that happens to be vegan. (or not, if you order from their regular menu.) it's also amazingly impressive that veganchefjay has developed the vegan menu to be what it is (nothing short of impressive) and he's only 19 years old.

so i guess the one downside is if you're me or the people i went with, you leave kind of feeling like a loser because you weren't that awesome when you were 19. or 35.

That's it, I really wanted to go before after the first time you relayed how great this place is, and I am all about how cool VeganchefJay is at 19, and now I really MUST go. When and how I will get to Long Island remains to be seen, but 3 Brothers Cafe, somehow, someday, I 'm comin' for ya! :)

I was out on LI with some friends last night and when it was decided that we needed dinner, one of my non-vegan friends asked if we could go back to 3 Bros since we were all so pleased with what we got last time. We shared the zucchini sticks and got three pizzas: buffalo seitan, eggplant parm and bianca. All amazing. I forget entrees we got last time, but we had the crab cakes and the eggplant rollatini appetizers and freaked out from the goodness.

While we were there, people at another table ordered the regular crab cakes, but they were sold out so they got the vegan ones instead. I love that. I love places like this because people who would never think to try vegan food or step foot in a vegan establishment just might get curious enough to try it if it's right under their noses and decide this is something they can be OK with sometimes after all. Thank you, Jay and family!

Just got takeout at 3 bros yesterday and saw the thanksgiving menu. It looks SOO good! Makes me want to ditch my family and go.

Unfortunately I can't do that, but my mom agreed to go instead of doing a big family thing if they have it on Christmas!

We asked yesterday if they'd do it on Christmas, but the guy my partner spoke to (possibly Jay's father?) said this was the 1st time they're doing something like this so he wasn't sure.

So everybody go on Thanksgiving so it sells out & they have another one on Christmas, ok! haha

p.s. I had the penne alla vodka for the 1st time last night and it was awesome. I ate half for dinner and then the other half for breakfast this morning haha. It was that good.

Update y'all: Jay's family sold the original place in Rockville Centre (the new owners supposedly plan to keep the vegan menu, but they were being big ol' jerks to Jay about returning some stuff he let them borrow, so I don't plan on going there), but they're opening up a new Three Brothers Pizza Cafe in Farmingdale, Long Island!
Bad news: Farther away from the city for all you people who want to visit
Good news: Closer to me!! new menu items! Brick oven pizza!
The grand opening is tomorrow. And I'll be there getting everything.

That makes me both happy and sad. Is the new place convenient to the LIRR?

Also, I saw this on the Facebooks shared from Jay:

"It's official...I'm doing a vegan popup restaurant called jay kitchen on April 25th and April 26th at the Old Bowery Station in NYC! Stay tuned for the 5 course tasting menu and more details."

I just googled from penn station and it appears to be about the same as the old location. The trip to the farmingdale location is about 15-20 minutes longer and it's still a mile away from the LIRR, just like the RVC location.

But I'm always down for a meetup and I'm willing to pick people up for the train station always!

thanks for the heads up joyfulgirl. We've only made the trip once but the food was awesome...I'll have to try and invent a good reason to go to Farmingdale now to support.
that pop-up thing sounds promising as well, ooh and April 25th is my bf's bday/4th veganniversary and he would love something like that hmmmm.
