Hrm. A movie or anime screening where we sell refreshments and have a table where people can buy a piece of paper and crane instructions for a few bucks?

We can have sweet and savory refreshments. Sushi, mochi, stuff like this: http://steamykitchen.com/13791-sushi-ca ... cakes.htmlI'm wondering if anime might be too niche to get a decent turnout. If we make it a whole day thing, maybe we can mix it up with stuff like Ringu or martial arts films? Back in 2004, one of my friends coordinated an event he called "Tsunami Tsunday". It was a marathon screening of all the LotR extended editions in an auditorium at NYU. It was pay what you wish and people came and went since no one could sit still through all that. They also sold refreshments. Maybe we can do something similar?

If I don't hear from my friend about NYU by tomorrow (I only know how to get in there via the AR club and I don't think this qualifies), I'm going to try contacting some regular venues like Littlefield, Union Hall and the Bell House. They all do occasional free events, so I think they may be OK with making money just on the bar. And I'm pretty sure the Bell House did a benefit for Haiti last year, so I think they may be open to this kind of thing. It'd be great if I could tell them specifically what movie(s) we'd like to show. What are your thoughts? I also just reached out to my friend who works anime conventions to find out how to get permission to charge to show other people's work. And who should we raise money for? I'm thinking Doctors Without Borders and an animal rescue group. What do you all think? Here's a list of animal groups: http://consciouscat.net/2011/03/12/help ... -in-japan/

Cool. My friend is trying to put me in contact with a company that holds licenses for loads of Japanese movies (anime and live action). He thinks there's a good chance they'll give us the license for the event, but we'll obviously be limited to their catalog.

I just emailed the licensing people. I'll see what they have to say before reaching out to venues (which would probably be pointless today anyway).
ETA: They already replied. They can provide the films but need more details. Woo!

of course, the raffles don't have to be thematic or whatever. either way, i'm good at getting people to send me their stuff. do we have a date? that might be the only issue. i know a lot of people want weeks and week to get stuff sent out. but maybe the nyc people can go solicit places on foot.

Yeah, I don't think it'd have to be themey, just awesome. Or relatively cool at the very least.

Hi --
This is Chris. I'm a friend of Dayna's who migrated from the Facebook thread, where planning had also been going on. What movies are available in the catalog?
For the raffle, maybe we can get a comic book store to donate some Japanese manga? Or maybe, since the people most interested in the event would be Japanese film affectionados, some Japanese movie DVDs?

Yay Tofulish!
Chris thats a great idea. I have a pretty good relationship with Midtown Comicssince I'm in there every Wednesday, so I'll ask next week (or sooner, if this starts moving quickly).
I'm waiting for the guy to get back to me about the best way to access the catalog, but the name of the company is Media Blasters, if anyone wants to take a look.
