Mr8 and I went to a charity dinner. The main course was awful, probably the worst food I've been served in years. Dessert was ok but nothing special. As a result of this, we've volunteered to cook for the next event and are considering a couple of different menus.

Well, if you're me and get told you have the job, they won't let you start until said thesis has been finished!

How many guests are expected to be there for their next event? I imagine that could be quite the task!

Procrastinating is what grad students do best. That and sarcasm.

Today I spent about 3 hours discussing with my bf about general women rights. His position can be summarized like this: women have always remained at home to care for the kids, therefore it's good, and men decide better when they don't have annoying influences by women, so all decisions should be made by men, because they are in power because they are physically stronger and that's how nature intended life to be.

All this was in German, a language I'm becoming more and more fluent with, but still, can I say I have a headache, beside being utterly disgusted?
I'm realizing that beside being homophobic he's also misogynistic, and I'm beginning to doubt I can ever have a long term relationship with someone whose ideas disgust me to this extent.

The only positive point of the whole discussion was the end, which saw him agreeing that if politicians are part of a Christian Democratic party, they most likely believe in Christian teachings and will therefore try to enact them into laws, therefore perpetuating women' oppression as according to the church ideas. It was a fight to get him to agree to this basic point.

What the hell am I doing with this guy?!?!?

I'll check that with them if we get the go-ahead but I can't imagine it being more than 40 people at the most.

So, my sister and I took a two-day side trip to Bruges, Belgium last week. (Breathtaking place and I recommend it!) Anyhoo, so we were driving into Bruges and my sister was driving our other sister's car and she was terribly nervous about the drive to begin with and I don't know if anyone here's ever driven there, but Bruges cobblestone streets are sharp turns and incredibly tight with poor signage and locals careening about and mad cyclists thronging and mopeds speeding by and tourists everywhere and so on. So my sister and I first arrive and she's on the verge of tears from frustration already from the harrowing hairpin trip and we turn down a one way street in Bruges which I suppose we were going the wrong way on and were instantly surrounded by a flock of disgruntled local cyclists who briefly descended upon our car, scowling. My sister then stops the car, throws up her hands helplessly looks at them all and shouts: "I'm sorry! I'm Canadian!" out her window at them, as if that assplains everything.

the last three years of my life can be explained with "whatever man, I'm Australian". often I'll call them a croissant for added authenticity. it's worked so far, so I think she's onto something :)

Bruges was super cute! I second your recommendation. I took the train there. Once there it was a very walkable city.

Tomorrow I have to go to a father's day cookout with my dad's side of the family. Soooo not looking forward to it. I like my grandfather and his wife (whom the rest of my family members inexplicably dislike, so I have to listen to them talk smack about her behind her back), and I'd feel bad if I didn't see my grandfather on father's day. He's the last grandparent I have left. But having to sit and listen to the rest of them... they think it's funny to describe the way they've killed animals (raccoons, lobsters, rats, etc.), because they know my mom and I are disturbed by it.

Hahahaha! Yes, Bruges and Ghent are terrible to navigate in a car!

I have to walk round a shopping mall for 3 hours today, with two storm troupers (who don't normally speak when they're in costume), and stop the dads and their kids to ask if they want photographed for the shopping centre's Father's Day competition. Not only is my introvert cringing at the thought, I have to go tomorrow and watch my friend bury his little girl. I really don't want to go to work today but that isn't an option. I'm afraid I'm going to end up blubbing in front of customers and forking storm troupers.

Is "forking" an adjective or a verb here? It's pretty funny as a verb.

I feel a bit weird. Not sure why. I should go and clean the kitchen partly because the activity should distract me and make me feel better, partly because I've been planning to clean for my lovely but stressed flatmate who is coming back tonight, and partly because I made a mess making chocolate cupcakes yesterday. (The icing fought back. I wanted to bring them to share with friends and hadn't left as much time as I should have, but thought 'Oh I can ice them in 10 minutes' and it took about an hour to mix the icing up. It was fine though, other people were about an hour later than me!)

Right. Cleaning. Go!

Mr Rose volunteered to do the ironing as I have a splinted hand at the moment, and proceeded to make such a forking melodrama about it that I just want to kick him. He's acting like he deserves a fricking medal for ironing the shirts that he's going to wear to work. Stick it up your arse, honey.
