It seems so incredible that such a short storm caused so much havoc in a security-critical area like the DC region. It sounded like there was a lot of substation infrastructure damage.

I just made a discovery. Sir Ian McKellen used to be young. And was really really attractive.* I have the most awkward famous person crushes.





*I'm sure he is now as well but the age gap is a bit much for me.

I think it's easy to speak in the abstract about how incest is really only verboten because of social taboos and consenting adults can do what they like, but the reality of most incest is that even when all involved are adults there is often a power differential that makes consent difficult or impossible to come by.

And, anyway, the vast majority of incest is not two consenting adults, it's an adult and a child, and thus any joke about incest is bringing in that unsavoury flavouring.

Submitted a rental application for a place in a good location with some potential flatmates. If we get the place, my budget will be significantly more comfortable starting September. Hopefully it will be successful, though I'm second guessing myself all over the place.

I've written the personal statement for a job application over the last couple of days. It's not a bad statement at all, but I don't like writing all that flowery nonsense.

In other news, I get to learn how to withdraw from a case...yay for clients who are uncooperative!

One of the other new attorneys at my job has apparently switched to a different firm after coming here for maybe 3 or 4 days over 3ish weeks. Weird. But another friend is replacing her! I love working with my friends; it makes coming to work every day fun and enjoyable. I love my job.

Feeling so much anxiety over this dumb patio I decided I needed. It keeps costing more and more, and I'm not even sure my landlord will pay for it. I initially thought it'd cost maybe... $60 total? So I thought if he didn't pay, who cares, it makes me happy. But it's already at about $110 and I think it needs another $30-40 before it'll be finished! Argh. It's made with all wonky-shaped rocks so I wasn't sure how to know how many I'd need so I've been just winging it. I fill up a wheel barrow and I'm thinking, "man! That's a lot of rocks!" and then I take them home and it only covers up a couple feet! :(

So I went next door and knocked on my neighbors door, their dog has been barking outside nonstop for over two hours. No one answered but as I was about to leave, one of the guys came arrived home. I told him his dog has been outside for hours barking and I think it'd be best if he goes inside. He was all 'oh he'd be just as scared of the fireworks even if he was inside."..... right dude... that's not the only reason I'd like him to go inside.

What do you guys think? Should I get a degree? College or Bachelors. Argh. Okay, here's my thinking. I have some credits, I've taken classes here and there. But for no reason really, so pointless! But now I want to take classes again, and it seems really dumb to keep paying for classes and having debt when there is literally no reward (other than knowledge of course :P). So, I feel ready enough to say 'sure, I'll go for a degree', however it feels like justification for me just wanting some easy art classes, because I don't actually know the point of a degree for me. BLARGH

It's over my head, too - but I love to see how scientists share their ideas, and these two are amazing. Engaging, clear, and the Italian woman has an neat comic-book ppt style which complements her Italian accent & super science geekery in an amazing way.

(Also, there are several CERN bloggers live-translating the presentations into the kind of English I understand.)
