Why doesn't every middle school gym class have that rope thingy whatever?

Because it's much LESS embarrassing than climbing a real rope, and we all know that middle school gym is all about maximum embarrassment.

Am I the only one who never climbed a rope in school?

We climbed ropes in school, starting in maybe third grade. These ropes were attached to the ceiling, which was 20 feet high. We didn't use any sort of safety equipment. I wonder why no one every protested the safety of this.

I never climbed a rope in school. I climbed several ropes in the Army, however.

If I did, I have blocked it out.

We had ropes, but didn't climb them. Mainly we got told off for doing Tarzan swings on them on the days we were allowed to use the climbing frame (which they were attached to). I tried to climb one once but couldn't.
But in secondary school a teacher showed me how to grasp one rope in each hand and do a backward somersault from standing, which I could just about do, and felt really clever/ athletic.

Nope. We had a rope, we were meant to climb it. But somehow I never got that far. I have a feeling I'm not the only one who resents high school here.

this is exactly what happened at my school. i always wondered how it was even legal for us to be able to climb a rope 20 ft+ high with nothing more than they gym teacher "spotting us" and one of those blue mats underneath the rope.

I bet you I could still make an asparagus of myself and get hurt trying to climb that rope.

I like that the calculator in the secretary set is more than twice the size of the typewriter.

We had the rope in gym class, but I was only ever able to stand on the giant knot at the bottom and swing to and fro. Mostly it was there so the boys could be all, "Hey everyone, look at my superior upper body strength!"

Did nobody else have a cargo net? I loved that thing.

They banned rope climbing, archery, and horseback riding at my high school due to "liability issues." I wanted the same right to crush my skull and put an arrow through my classmate as every other red blooded American!!

Seriously, though. How dangerous is archery?!
