The key is that the gap there is actually triangular-- it's enough larger that it actually has the same area as the removed square. Notice how wide it is when it's put back together-- it's pretty visible.

...that is, it's not trianglar, but it's wider than it looks. There's a space there, anyway.

I watched the names by state over time Gifs for about five minutes last night - pretty neat. Funny that when a name becomes popular it becomes more popular. I went to several different primary schools as a child and there was always at least 1 Jennifer per class sometimes 3 in a class of 12-15 girls. Mind you, I hated my name when I was young and the only one in every class with that name. At 8 I would have loved to be a Jennifer or a Lisa or a Christine. Kids often want to be just like all the other kids. Maybe that's why parents continue to follow the trends with names.

no one has my name. it drove me crazy when i was a kid, because those pencils and shoelaces with names on them were so in, and every time we saw them in a store i'd run over to the rack, all full of hope, but NO. denied every time.

I do. And acr, don't feel bad...my name is SO common that they were always out of my version of the shoelaces and keychains and whatnot. (I have the same problem with my bra, shoe, and shirt sizes...average to the max!)

I have an uncommon name spelled in an exceptionally uncommon way (I've met one other person with my spelling in my whole life), that is a very common men's name from another culture minus an accent and with the addition of a y. So one year for Christmas my mum put name pencils in our stockings. My brother got ones with his (fairly common) name on them. I got ones with a very common men's name from another culture on it. "It's the closest I could find!" My mother said brightly. "Maybe you could just write in the 'y'."

I'm still vaguely angry about it and it's been nearly 20 years.

I had this same problem growing up! Then all of the sudden, when I was a teenager, my name was number three for babies. Too little too late, American parents.

i've given up hope of ever seeing my name on a pencil, but i do see it on absinthe, so it's all right.

Another one here with a name that will never be on a pencil. There is a giant corporation out there that changed their name a few years ago and happened to choose my first name because marketing surveys indicated that people had a positive reaction to it. So now you can follow my progress on the stock market. Also, they own a stadium. So I guess I can't complain about not having a mug with my name on it when I've got a whole stadium.
