I haven't browsed this entire thread (so I'm not sure if they have been shared), but I did recently find out about these Raccoon Dogs aka Tanuki!
They aren't related to raccoons at all, and are native to East Asia. In Japanese folklore, they are mischievous and jolly creatures that shapeshift, but are somewhat gullible and absent-minded. FUN!

Also! Apparently the “raccoon suit” in Super Mario Bros. 3 (officially called the Tenuki suit) is meant to be one of these.
