Hey ppkers,
there's another vegan in one of my classes!!!!
I was looking at people's chosen presentation topics for the "Language and Identity" course, and there's one about the health benefits of veganism. The girl who's doing this states that she is vegan herself. Aaaah! I've never met another vegan outside the ppk!
How do I talk to her without sounding creepy?

She'd probably be just as excited as you to find another vegan! Chat her up!
I actually met a vegan dude at the health food store yesterday because I was asking if they had any vegan cookies available. He was infront of me in line and had already paid, but waited until the lady who worked there was done telling me pretty much "I dunno, look around more", and gave me a whole spiel on all the different vegan cookies available like what brands and where to find them for way cheaper than a health food store. He was so excited to give me tips and it was awesome and adorable.

But then I ran away, instead of staying and starting an actual conversation with him, because I'm socially awkward. Boo!

"Hi! My name is Phoenix and I'm really looking forward to your presentation since I am also vegan!"

almost every non ppk person i've met who says they are vegan turns out not to be vegan! like the girl i met in class who, for days, i thought was vegan until we had a class potluck and i was like "i brought vegan cookies so we could have something to eat!" and she goes "oh, you care about baked goods?"

anyway, you can talk to her! all you have to say is "hey! i'm vegan, too! I'm psyched about your presentation!"

Argh, I'm kind of socially incompetent when it comes to talking to new people.
Anyway, I'll find out who she is (I've only read the written announcement of her presentation, and I don't know most people's names yet) and try not to make a fool of myself.

This is so exciting, Phoenix! It's so rare that I meet any vegans in the suburbs or real life in general (who are not PPKers or other internet site people), but when I have, it's been so exciting!!

Do you have to do the presentations in front of the class? If you don't find out who she is ahead of time, and say something like IJDI or Choirqueer said, you could always talk to her after the presentation! Then you could say something about how you really appreciated her presentation, as you are also vegan?

Then talk about tots, damn it.

oh yeah, also. she didn't eat any of the vegan cookies! just a bunch of other non vegan stuff!

I have met three real-life vegans at work this week! Amazing! I get all excited and silly and want to take off my shoes and show them and tell them where I got them from, then write down websites and ask if they love Isa and Terry's books. I'm such a geek.

Know the feeling. Fingers crossed that you run into the man again and talk to him.

Usually it's better if they find that out early in the relationship ;-)

Don't scare her!

I was so excited to find a vegan in my new town I freaked her out and scared her away. My bad.

That's what I was worrying about.
Me being so excited to find another vegan that I would just gush about things like vegan cheeses and cookie recipes.
Besides, now that I think about it... We're advised to use data from internet forums for our linguistic research and analysis. Uh-oh, what if this thread gets kfishered? I mean, I even mentioned which course I'm in. Aaargh.

I think I might know who she is. At least I have a theory. If I'm right, she just might be ppk material.
The girl in question was definitely wearing vegan shoes and had a Sex Pistols badge on her backpack.
She looks cute and totally reminds me of a friend of mine.
Later I did a sneaky thing and checked the girl's student account, but it doesn't have a picture, so I can't be sure.
Oh well, I guess I'll talk to her after the presentation.

Talk to her! I mean, c'mon.. vegans on Austria gotta stick together.

I was driving home yesterday and saw a red VW Beetle with a Go Vegan! sticker a few cars ahead of me. I became very (even perhaps somewhat inappropriately) excited, and wanted to get a look at them, but the traffic was too heavy!

Phoenix, that is absolutely exciting!! When is the presentation? *chewsfingernails*

OMGs, I just checked, and hers isn't until January! I do hope she will speak up during class discussion and either mention her name or veganism, so I'll find out.
(If I was in a novel or a TV series, I'd just pass a note along that would say, "If you're the vegan girl, wave to the artificial redhead sitting by the door. My name is Phoenix and I'm vegan too!" ...but I have this feeling that I might be a bit old for things like that.)

Update:
I'm still doing the seminar (although it's driving me mad, and keeping me from sleeping properly and enjoying my free time the way I should - but I'm so working on that right now), and today I needed something from the other secretary's office. When I came in, the girl with the Sex Pistols badge was already there, talking to the secretary, and I caught her name. It's definitely her! She's the other vegan! I couldn't talk to her right then and there, but I will! :D

Good luck! Usually people I've met have been pretty cool about it since it is so rare to meet other vegans randomly. The only other vegan in my cohort just decided to be vegetarian though and I'm totally bummed about it.

Yay! This is exciting, I hardly know any non-PPK vegans! I hope you get the chance to talk to her!
