Semi-annual "mope about the water bill" day. My shower is so dreadful I never have enough hot water to wash my hair properly, how am I spending so much on water?! Dread to think how much it'd be if I could actually take showers more than 7 minutes long.

Do you have a water meter? We just have a flat daily rate based on our council tax band. Is the amount they say you use so unreasonable that there could be a leak in the supply pipe between the meter and the house or something?

I do have a water meter, but it's annoyingly hard to get at to look at, it's embedded in the pavement round the corner fit some bizarre reason and you have to try to lever it up to check it. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a leak, this house is pretty rubbish, but I dunno. Looking on Google we pay around average for a family of four/five except there's only two of us and I'm the only one home most of the time.

OMG definitely look into this!!! This happened recently on property my mom & aunt co-own. There was a leak under the house and they didn't realize the water bills had been increasing a bit, until suddenly the bill one month was $2000!! It was insaaaane. Found the leak and fixed it, though.

Yeah, pipes do leak. (That seems more likely than someone secretly running a water-powered potato rumbler in your shed all day, for their black market mashed potato operation.) I'm sure it will be a pain to look into but probably worth it.

Do you get water bills annually or have they decided to put the the rate-per-litre up?

I just noticed this morning that there is a random wet spot on the bedroom wall. Not near anything, just an isolated circle of wet. I read that that could be a sign of a leak so I'll see about investigating that. My landlord only does the bare minimum of repairs here though.

It's a six monthly bill. It's been the same amount roughly since we moved into this house a couple of years ago so I don't think they've increased the price. We pay more here it seems than in our last house which was much bigger and even had a garden hose which surely used more water!

Ah, somehow I thought you owned the house. If you're renting the landlord should pay for the repairs, shouldn't they? It might take a lot of nagging, because they won't be saving money on the water bill, but if there is a damp patch on the wall that could indicate structoral damage which should concern them. I hope they look into it, get any issues fixed and that your water bill does go down without too much inconvenience!

Yeah the landlord should pay but probably won't! Our boiler has been dodgy for ages - I timed it once and the hot water lasts about 6 minutes in the shower. Which isn't great for my long hair! The plumber says the boiler is old too but landlord says "it still works" sooo.

See the boiler is only inconveniencing you, but if there is water leaking into the fabric of the building that may cause it to fall down and him lose his investment/ source of rent, so hopefully he would care about it enough to get it fixed.
Commiserations on the boiler; I don't know how I would cope with only 6 minutes of hot water!

That's true. As far as I know they are small landlords, basically this used to be their house then they bought another one and rent this one out instead. I had a look at the outside wall where the bedroom wet patch is but to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I was hanging out the window in the rain so didn't get a great view.

And the shower thing is pretty horrible! It also takes ages to heat up that small amount so you have to leave it at least half an hour in between showers which makes mornings fun.

On my work computer, every time I type "www.goo.." it would auto-populate so I didn't have to finish typing out "google." I got so used to it, that I would automatically type "www.goo" and then enter. One day, my computer was super slow and it did not auto-populate, so now I keep accidentally going to a Japanese site at goo.ne.jp.

At least it wasn't a porn site?

I really want a camp on a lake.
I have wanted this my whole life and I have been saving for several years for it.
But I don't think it's ever going to happen. my primary home is not paid off and I am in the process of getting my kitchen renovated ($$$), I am within a decade of retiring and don't want to have a mortgage afterwards. I spent over $22k on vet bills this year -- all these things add up to no lakehouse.

given everything that is going on, this is a huge first world problem, but I am disappointed and frustrated all the same.

Life is annoying.
Maybe when you retire you could sell your current house and live at a lake full-time?I have no idea if that's even vaguely possible.

There's only one place around my house/work that I can get delivery from, so I order from them somewhat often. I always put "no egg or fish sauce, if usually included" in the little box no matter what I order, just in case. I always imagine them looking at it, going "Egg? Why would there be EGG in this? What a dummy!" ...except today I ordered some spicy tofu noodle thing and forgot to ask for it with no egg, and it was FULL OF EGG. No one wanted it, so I ended up just throwing it away.

Sometimes I have to fill out forms that require you to enter your middle name. I don't have a middle name.

^ I don't have a middle name either (and my daughter doesn't either).
it's a lifelong struggle for people to grasp that concept.

As in an online form where you can't leave the "middle name" space blank? I do have a middle name and I can see that is a monumentally stupid design. What do you do, write n/a or none or something in the box? Do you then get addressed as Raspberry None Complaint?

Yes, sometimes it's a required field for online forms, and you can't submit the form without filling it in. If it's just something stupid, I'll sometimes put in a random word, like Pizza. But if it's more official, I split my first name and use the second half as a middle name (luckily my first name ends in anne, so that works). I do worry sometimes that I'll get in trouble for using middle names that aren't legally mine.

I have thought about getting a legal name change to add a middle name. I'd just have to think of a really good one first.

I don't either, and it is extremely irritating how often this happens.

I'm so cold! It feels silly to complain because it's about 0 degrees C which isn't cold to a lot of the world but I'm really cold!

I always find it strange how small variations in temperature can seem so huge. Like last week it was 6 degrees or so and it felt pretty mild. Now, I feel as though my hands and feet and maybe my face will fall off.

My dad doesn't have one, either. He has several siblings, all of whom have middle names. People seem to be convinced that his parents just ran out of middle names, but my dad is the oldest sibling.

Neither of my parents have middle names but both of their sisters do, which I always thought was weird.

I just read this and thank you ... I laughed out loud ...

Anne, alone in the house (aside from dog (sleeping), & cat (whereabouts unknown at this time) laughing out loud ...
