You'd know if it wasn't a compliment, because then it would be a ✔-

Just curious, why do you want to go graduate school for liberal arts, where you could be asked to do more tasks you regard as pointless... in preparation for, I don't know, a poorly-paid job teaching uninterested freshman how to write about their important opinions on The Big Issues in Today's Society That Everyone Must Take a Position On? I'm not trying to advise you--I'd just like to understand what people get out of subjecting themselves to this.

I don't know anything about the school system in your country, what you have to do to get a place on a course or the kind of hoops you have to jump through but I admire your daring. I don't know what sort of repercussions this will have for you but I hope that it doesn't affect you negatively.

I have handed in countless essays about leprechauns when I don't feel like answering the question given to me. I have also dropped out of uni twice so far, hopefully next time will go better :/

Of course there will be other "pointless" things that she (and I, and whomever else went to graduate school or any school) will have to do. The GRE is simply one huge ridiculous hoop that not only costs a bunch of money, but also has very little to do with your success as a graduate student. Assignments and tests (that sometimes feel pointless) are part of academia, but the GRE needs to be reevaluated (which some have already realized) as a "necessary" test to take to get into programs. in my opinion, of course.

No, you're not being insesnitive. I thought it was awesome, too.

Catburglar, to answer your question: that's a pretty gross generalization of both the liberal arts and of freshman composition courses. First off, I've taught freshman comp for 7 years, and I've found fewer disinterested students than I have interested ones. I *like* teaching freshman writing, contrary to the stereotype. Granted, I wouldn't like it if I were teaching at a school whose curriculum still required the five-paragraph essay on "The Big Issue"--but the truth is, very few schools are on board with that kind of pedagogy, anymore. Most composition/rhetoric programs are about teaching use of language, writing as a process rather than product, and un-learning the idea of research paper as a report.

In other words, I get to dispel a lot of the shiitake they learned as high schoolers--curricula centered only around teaching them how to test and support the really flawed racist/classist system we have. It's liberating, and it's been the job I'm happiest doing. Because so much of my own teaching philosophy rests on undoing the damage of test-based education, you can probably see why this was a hoop I resented going through. The other hoops I'll be facing won't carry the same ethical connotations.

Also, I really love low-paying work. It's my favorite kind.

I didn't know they added writing to the GRE. I am not a fan of writing.

I miss the logic portion of the GRE, why can't they bring that back?

The logic portion of the GREs was the only section upon which I performed really well.

Nope--no food, water, gum, nothing. You can take breaks to drink some water and have a snack, but honestly, I didn't want to have to raise my hand and wait to get the proctor's attention just so I could walk out of the testing room for a sip of water. The testing conditions definitely affected how well I was able to perform on the exam.

GRE's are kind of bs. I'm thankful that I'm a relatively good test taker because otherwise I would be more than bitter about these standardized exams.

Fee, I like you.

And, I am terrible at exams, especially standardized ones.
I think their opinion of my writing skills would only have improved if I gave the sentence you did.
Good thing I chose a grad school in Denmark where it didn't matter! (Woo!)

They made me take off my headband. I don't know how I was going to cheat with my headband...also, you can only use tissues provided by your proctor.

GRE testing rules are ridiculously strict. It's partly to keep people from cheating and partly to control noise and testing conditions. I had to jump through all kinds of hoops to be allowed to take my diabetes supplies in with me (doctor's note several months in advance, lots of paperwork). You're allowed pencils and some blank paper given to you by the testing company. And that's it.

honestly.. if you can cheat with your headband it means you're clever enough to go to grad school.

They made me turn around and "pull out" my back pockets on my jeans. I'm sure you guys can imagine how impossible that is. And how uncomfortable it is to lift up your shirt so they can see your waistband.
